Know your own mind a little better..
By The Lucid Librarian
This book provides the layperson with an interest in psychology an entry point into the workings of the mind. Fine loosely categorises the brain with common adjectives in nine chapters: the vain brain; the emotional brain; the immoral brain; the deluded brain; the pigheaded brain; the secretive brain; the weak-willed brain; the bigoted brain; the vulnerable brain. When Fine focuses on using research to illustrate these common behaviours this book is a thoroughly interesting and informative read. She has a warm and amusing tone that readily engages the reader:

From the chapter 'The Weak-willed Brain':

"It's hard work being in charge of a brain. Despite all the help it receives from the mental butler, the conscious self still finds its workload rather heavy. And, ironically, one of its more arduous duties involves keeping itself under control. Having decided to become a paragon of perfect living - to forgo desserts, stay late at work and stop thinking about that rather attractive next-door neighbour it must follow through. But as Aristotle remarked (perhaps while reaching for his second slice of baklava), 'The hardest victory is the victory over self.' Willpower is set into battle against the impulse to indulge and - alas - it is all too often resolve that is the loser." (p151)

When Fine inserts personal commentary by relating the topic being discussed to herself, her husband or their life to the subject, or even to self-help-ism the writing falls flat.

"'Why don't you go to sleep?' mumbles my husband, roused by my fidgeting. 'I'm trying', I retort with all the patience I can muster, which is to say none. 'But I keep thinking about how little sleep I'm going to get before the baby needs feeding again.' 'That won't help', my husband advises. 'Think about something else.' 'I can't', I say. (I do not remember whether the 'you idiot' was spoken aloud or merely thought.) My husband helpfully suggests a tip from an eight-week meditation course for which - in an uncharacteristic moment of spirituality I can only attribute to extreme sleep deprivation - he recently signed up." (p150)

The author veers into anecdote and these personal segues sits awkwardly with the rest of the text as an informal introduction to human thinking and behaviour.

"That fleshy walnut inside your skull is all you have in order to know yourself and to know the world. Yet, thanks to the masquerading of an untrustworthy brain with a mind of its own, much of what you think you know is not quite as it seems." (p2)

Aside the gratuitous personal commentary, this text has well-presented and referenced research, and an index (which is a big plus for those that wish to move on from popular science and read more in depth).
