Charming, Colorful and Creative Book for Children on Caring for the Earth
By L. M. Keefer
If you are looking for a charming, colorful and creative book to teach children about taking care of our earth, this book delights. The illustrations embody the philosophy: they are quilt squares, making use of unused fabric. Each illustration is imaginatively conceived and stitched. Children will have fun talking about what they see in the squares. The illustrations are quite winsome.

The book is brimming with actionable ideas on what children can do to take care of our beautiful earth: waste less, use non-chemical sprays, don't litter, take the train or bus when you can, plant a garden, recycle etc. The book can be a catalyst for an adult to think together of ideas with a child on how to take care of the earth. It would also be wonderful in a classroom to think of a class project on how they can care for the earth. Then, for an art activity, the students could create a patchwork square of their own out of collage materials to illustrate something they love about the exquisite earth that is worth preserving. The squares could be placed together on a bulletin board. When I taught preschool and elementary classes, I would ask design stores for any leftover wallpaper books and use the wallpaper for art projects as the wallpaper was patterned like fabric but could be glued instead of stitched.

For parents who care about cultivating a care for the earth in their children, this book enchants. It has depth. The author wrote in the forward that some years ago she was looking for a book to teach her son care for the earth. When she couldn't find what she was looking for, she wrote this book and stitched the quilt squares. She has designed textiles for the home furnishings industry, exhibited her award winning art internationally and studied art at Parsons School of Design and Boston University. The art is truly fetching. Quilters and home schools would appreciate this book, too.

Long Live Earth
By Anna M. Ligtenberg
ISBN 059048012x - Printed in Hong Kong. No age range specified. Paperback, 25 pages. Published by Scholastic Inc. in April 1994; copyright 1993. By Meighan Morrison.

In short, four-line stanzas, the book is a poem about the earth - how it began, how it has become polluted, what we can do about it.

There are the whack-a-doos out there whose religious beliefs will conflict with the information about how Earth came to be and how animals - including man - has evolved. Those parents will want to avoid this book. That's incredibly sad, as well as bizarre, because even if - or maybe especially if - you believe that some man in the sky created Earth and everything on it, I'd think you'd want to take care of the place. Nonetheless, if your superstition conflicts with reality, this is not the book for you.

For others, religious and otherwise, this is a wonderful book that is aimed at teaching young children to love and care for the planet they inhabit and how that love and care can make a real difference. For Earth Day, yes, but for any day of the year that you can try to impress upon a child the urgency of caring for the earth. No matter how Earth came to be, it's clear to most of us that something has to be done to keep it inhabitable for future generations and, beyond practical matters, to preserve the beauty of the place. The poem is not the finest I've ever read, with a choppy flow and weird line breaks that, for an adult won't matter much, but which may interfere a little with a child learning to read. The illustrations are primitive-looking quilt-squares that go well with the text and add a visual, especially to the damage man does to the planet, to the story. They are not, however, the visually appealing sort of thing that captures the imagination of little ones. One last note - on the very last page, where there is no text or illustration, there is this: "Printed on environmentally friendly, chlorine-free paper." And that, just doing the right thing and not drawing any special attention to it, is exactly what our world needs. For the importance of the topic and the engaging way it's presented, I can't give this book less than five stars. Buy a copy - used saves trees! - and educate yourself and your child!

Best children's book on the importance of the environment
By A Customer
Children and adults both will love the look and content of this little gem of a book, an honest and lyrical account of the history and current state of the earth, targeted for pre-schoolers and up. The illustrations are especially beautiful, all hand-stitched in quilt-like blocks using charming, colorful fabric scraps.
"No planet is like it, not Venus or Mars, the Earth has such beauty it outshines the stars."
