Not a bad starting point for the college-shopping journey

"Barron's Profiles of American Colleges 2017" (1598 pages) brings profiles of about 1650 four year colleges in the US. The first 250 or so pages of the book provide an "index of college majors", which is pretty handy actually, more so if your daughter or son is looking at some potential "off-center" majors. Wanna major in "wine and viticulture"? Hello Cal Polytechnic State, the only college in the country to offer this major!
The rest of the book gives a state-by-state overview of colleges and universities. Given that my oldest stayed in Ohio and my youngest went to DC (where I also went), I read up carefully on those two chapters as I am most familiar with them. Each college gets less than a page and the information is very basic, but seems on point. As to the numbers for tuition and room/board: the numbers for the colleges of my kids were correct, as in: the correct data for the 2015-16 school year (it lists American University's tuition at $43,100) Of course, if your son or daughter is an incoming HS senior, these numbers will be 2 years old by the time (s)he starts college (and 3 years if (s)he is an incoming HS junior). You'll want to update those numbers on-line (there are multiple sources for that, including of course the colleges' websites--AU's 2016-17 tuition is $46,800, room and board are on top of that, and not listed in this guide).
Does this book offer value for your money? It all depends what you are looking for in a college search book. There are a number of very basic ones, including this one and "Peterson's Four Year Colleges", which intend to provide "just the facts, 'mam", without any further subjective evaluation or assessment of the colleges. If your son or daughter is at the very beginning/early stages of thinking about college, this is not a bad place to start, simply to get a lay of the land. (When you buy this book, you get free on-line access to Barron's website with updated information, by the way.) Very helpful is that the colleges are listed state-by-state, as the majority of college kids stay in-state. After the early stages, it's likely that your son or daughter will quickly want to move on to other, more in-depth/subjective college search guides. Assuming your kid's college of interest makes the cut, the best of those traditionally has been Princeton's "Best Colleges", of which the 2017 Edition ("The Best 381 Colleges"), will come out in late August.

A must for anyone applying to colleges.

I didn't realize this book was so large! There is a lot of information in this book. We purchased the book because my daughter is a senior in high school this year. The book gives all the information on individual colleges, the cost, required SAT, etc. It's broken down by state.
