In recent years, the building has faced the threat of demolition to make way for a more conventional structure. In this first monograph, artist Noritaka Minami uses photography to document the current state of the capsules as a response to their potential disappearance.

About the Author
Noritaka Minami is Assistant Professor of Photography at Loyola University Chicago. He has also taught at Harvard University, Wellesley College, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, University of California Berkeley, and University of California, Irvine. Minami received his BA in Art Practice from the University of California, Berkeley in 2004, and his MFA in Studio Art from the University of California, Irvine in 2011. Exhibitions of his works have been held at UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design, Las Cienegas Projects, Griffin Museum of Photography, and Kana Kawanishi Gallery. He is a recipient of grants from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and Center for Photography at Woodstock.

Julian Rose is a senior editor at Artforum and a founding principal of the award-winning design studio formlessfinder. Trained in both art history and architectural practice, he creates design work and scholarship that investigate historical and contemporary interchanges between art and architecture, focusing on problems of material, form, and tectonics. His architectural proposals have been exhibited internationally at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the MAXXI in Rome. His essays on both art and architecture have been featured in such journals as Domus, Log, Artforum, and October.

Ken Yoshida is currently an Assistant Professor in theGlobal Arts Studies Program at the University of California, Merced, where heteaches visual culture and art history.

Minami’s 1972 is an architectural document of the Nakagin Capsule Tower, designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa, each capsule was a living space of 100 square feet. The book is itself a time capsule revealing a futurist utopian lifestyle that now 40 years later seems more dystopian, as many of the capsules show signs of lives worn out. The capsules seem more like concrete cells as one imagines a life locked inside the cramped space. The photographs are elegant, and as severe as the capsules themselves. We see traces of human detritus, but the people are missing. The only saving grace is that omnipresent circular window, a porthole of a space capsule, perhaps. We imagine a life lived outside the walls, an exterior life where we are social and engage with the world. But inside, a retreat to a monk’s ascetic nothingness. Quite an idea, and in 1972 Minami has shown us a metaphor of how we live in our own little cocoons, with our own little circular apertures trying to find meaning, freedom, and escape.

Okay to Get Through a Statistics Class

I am not a fan of statistics. Perhaps that is one reason I did not care for the way this book was written. This book was not easy to follow and was not helpful in learning the subject. It was okay to get me through the class.

MUST read if you're taking Stats

My Merchandising major was full of statistics classes. It felt like I have either a statistics class or an accounting class every single semester. Stats was SO difficult for me at first, and I was really struggling. With my 4.0 GPA on the line, I couldn't risk getting a poor grade in the course. If you're in the same boat I was, you really need to read this book.

This book covers all the stats basics - deviation, probabilities, factorials, chi squares, etc. She even takes you back through mean, median and mode and makes visualizing data in graphs and scatter plots simple. It's written in a really easy to understand, step-by-step way. I (almost) enjoy Statistics now!

Great book for understanding statistics!!!

This really helped me with my AP stats class. There's everything from standard deviations to hypothesis testing, all explained in easy steps. I got confused with the steps in my textbook, but this book broke everything down into bite-size pieces. Lots of graphs and pictures help too, as does a comprehensive index and table of contents. If you're taking a basic stats class, this one's for you.

I would have like to see more examples worked that we would expect to see in a STAT class. The layout isn't the best to find things quickly. It's a good handbook for the layperson, but for someone in class, I have been getting better results with Khan Academy.

A worthwhile read

This is one of those books where the author is able to create an intricate world filled with impeccable details of all aspects. Not only are you thrusted into a new world but you are also able to experience it in the way that the characters do.

I found the societal aspects to be interesting, combining classical mythical races with humanity of approximately the 1800s (not quite industrial revolution yet incorporates aspects from that era). It must have taken long hours and possibly sleepless nights to compose such an extensive world with creativity flowing endlessly throughout the tale.

Yes, there are quite a few characters to get to know, each with an distinguishable personality, but it's these very details that draw you in and make you curious about their foretold fate.

If there was one negative thing to note about this well-written tale, it would be that I noticed quite a few grammatical errors, specifically spelling, throughout the ebook. Simple, understandable ones that were accidentally overlooked.

A dawn good read (it snuck up on me)

This book started out with the usual orphan who happens to be gifted with powers. Fletcher is a bit of a pariah in his home town of Pelt. A simple, yet plausible series of events leads him to discover his powers, and puts him on the run from the law. I like that this book has no prophecy. There's no destined hero, or looming apocalypse. The world is at war with the orcs, but the hero, Fletcher, is just a boy finding his way in the midst of it all.

When he gets to the city of Coricillum, where Vocans, the summoned academy he is to train at is, he finds a city rife with corruption, racism, and the excesses of privilege that the noble class abuses.

In the midst of this all, Fletcher finds himself making friends of misfits, fighting in scenes that are not overblown to unrealistic proportions, and fine tuning his craft, so he can excel.

The good guys are well developed, while the villains are portrayed as arrogant, greedy, and treacherous.

As a whole, the book does a good job not getting ahead of itself, and developing at a pace that is enjoyable and relevant.

The magic system is simple yet serviceable, and skillfully I corporates the familiar, or "demons" as the book calls them.

This book would fit in the teen fantasy fiction genre, as it has no graphic rape or torture scenes, but this well seasoned fantasy lover of 35 years still enjoyed it thoroughly.

Very enjoyable, entertaining read

This novel is a lot of fun to read. It drew me in from page one, and I finished it in two days. As soon as I finished, I wanted to read the next book. Unfortunately that's not out yet, but I, for one, can't wait.

Other reviewers have likened it to Pokemon (still fun for me as an adult) and I can see that, as well as a comparison to Harry Potter.

Fletcher, the main character, learns he can summon demons (which aren't the traditional Christian demons we're all familiar with, but instead more like magical pets — where the pokemon comparison comes in) a rare ability usually reserved for the nobility. So he gets sent to school for summoners, to learn how to control demons, and use their mana (energy) to cast spells, after which Fletcher and the cast of junior summoners will be deployed to fight for their country in the battle against orcs.

I gave the book four stars because it was a whole lot of fun to read, but there were a few issues I had that, considering the entertainment level, were minor. Fletcher, while flawed, isn't as flawed as I like my main characters. (I'm a big fan of the anti-hero, and Fletcher doesn't fit the bill, but that's a personal preference.) The antagonists were mostly one dimensional, which was a bigger flaw, in my opinion, but not one that I couldn't overlook as a reader.

Aside from the premise of learning to control demons and magic, there's also a wonderful subplot of Fletcher's journey from where he grew up to where he ends in the book, and what all of that means for him. I won't go into detail to avoid spoilers, but it's one of the reasons I am super excited for book two. "Novice" also touches on class issues and race issues (something that is unfortunately very relevant in today's world) in a way that is accessible for any younger readers (it is a YA book, after all) without being watered down or anything like that.

All in all, it's a very enjoyable read that I have every intention of re-reading, and recommending to friends.

A good book in real-time scheduling

This book covers most important aspects in real-time systems. Including traditional real-time scheduling, real-time DB, fault tolerance, real-time communication. The authors do not simply introduce the theory, but try to explain the rationale and even detailed derivation procedure. This definitely helps students better understand the content. It's an excellent textbook for introduction to real-time systems at the postgraduate level.
The authors are world-class researchers in real-time systems. I really hope they would publish a newer version, incorporating their newest research results such as power-aware computing and wireless networks.

Very Good Review

Took the NLN on 6/12/2012. Scored 150 (81% verbal, 91% math, 86% science). All relative scores were above the 90th percentile.

The usefulness of this review guide is going to vary from person to person. Some people need a refresher in science from 2 years ago; some have not taken it at all. For me, I was somewhat strong in verbal, very strong in math, and weak in science before reviewing. This guide will let you know what you have to study. I read every word of the guide, did every practice problem, and completed every test (By the way, the CD included with the guide are the exact same questions in the book. You are not getting anything extra with the CD). When I took the test, there were no surprises in terms of structure. The practice tests in the guide (when used under a time limit) mimic the actual test environment. This is good because you can save time simply starting the problems instead of reading the instructions. I ran right to the end of the clock in the math section because most of the problems were very wordy and time consuming (but not necessarily difficult).

Verbal: Vocabulary and reading comprehension. The review guide will allow you practice picking out important information while reading the passages and managing time. It also highlights common questions (ex. What is the main topic? What is the best title for this passage? What can you infer from the author?). The vocabulary section will not help you that much. You will have to depend on your years of reading, schooling, media, etc if you want to nail the more complex words. Learning roots and suffixes helps marginally.

Math: Easiest section. You learn the formulas and procedures and you can answer any question, just check your arithmetic (test takers tend to rush and make small mistakes in adding or subtracting). No need to study anything else.

Science: The book helped the most in this section. While it reviews many many topics that will be on the test, you will run across problems that the book did not explicitly cover. For example, the book covers general information about electricity and magnetism, but my test included a quantitative problem regarding Coulomb's Law (which is a little more advanced than what the book gives you). If you're looking to perfect your scores, you will want to study each topic presented in the guide in more depth on your own. I took Anatomy/Physiology and Microbiology prior to taking the test and they helped me answer many fundamental questions.

Overall a very good review guide. The most important part was that it shakes the nerves when you actually take the test. If you do every practice exam understand time constraints, it will allow you to feel comfortable with the exam structure come test day. Taking a test not knowing what kind of test you are taking is half the stress. Good luck!

Excellent Choice

I purchased this book to help study for the NLN pre-nursing exam. This book is an excellent tool for learning about this exam. But the most important factor in determining which study tool to purchase is to remember that most of the information that is included on the CD and in the book is actually on the exam.

its not bad

This book has 3 things it covers, reading comprehension, math and science.

I would rate the math and science as 5 star and reading comprehension at 4 or so.

It has lots of practice questions. I think 4 tests on just math, 4 on just science and 4 on reading then the 3 complete practice tests that cover everything in the book.

The math covers about anything you can think of and explains how to do it also. Fractions, decimals, some geometry and algebra etc..

The science is also nice, a lot of facts on biology, chemistry and physics. Probably everything you need to know to get into the lpn course.

Reading comprehension is ok, but no explanations on why the answer they have is the right one. It is up to you to figure it out when some questions seem to have more than one answer.

It also has a good bit of verbal ability questions mixed in with the reading comprehension part, for example something like:

'They had an impromptu meeting today. Impromptu means' and then gives 4 multiple choice answers.

I only gave it 4 stars because from what I hear, there are things on the entrance exam thats not covered at all by the book.

There is no section for spelling which is on the test. It would be nice if it had a section for frequently misspelled words such as:

accomplish or acommplish, satelite or satellite, acomodations, accomodations etc...

It was written supposedly by the national league of nurses so they shoud have an idea of the words that will be on the tests. At least some of them.

Also nothing at all about the pattern recognition section of the test (what comes next in this series) type questions. Not even a mention.

They could of at least put a few tests to let you get some practice on how to look for patterns or something.

If you just need to brush up on math or your biology/science (which is really what i needed the most) this is a great book.

The really JSF book for begginers

I was searching for a good book to learn JSF from zero and after reading a lot of them I think I can say this is the one.

Things to thank for:

a) The book covers all the basics topics needed without requiring to complicate things
b) Is writen in a friendly language
c) The learning curve of the book is really smooth
d) The Zoran story is fun and interesting

Things to improve (subjectibly)

a) I dont know why the author use for the examples the oracle database (Oracle 11g) and not themost easy and extensive MySQL
b) Eclipse could be replaced for NetBeans wich in my opinion is 100 better (super subjectibly speaking)
c) The project or "case study" is not very relevant, I would prefer the case study to be a a blog or a shopping cart or even a forum instead.

Overall: I think this is a very good book for JSF starters, after finishing this one you will be able to read some others without getting lost.

This DVD, "Imagine" is the first run movie that was shown in theaters in 1988, just 8 years after John was murdered. It is the definitive (so far) biography of John's life and his music and is one of the best music biographies ever shown on the big screen.

I have this on laserdisc and have been waiting for the re-release on DVD for a long time. I also have "Gimme Some Truth- The Making Of Imagine" and every other official John Lennon DVD.

But this one is the first biographical film about just John (not The Beatles) that was released on the big screen. And it is great.

A Wonderful Experience

The DVD release of Imagine was long overdue and now that it is available perhaps a new generation of music lovers will understand a little of the magic, majesty and tragedy of John and The Beatles. The film is as fresh and insightful as always. It sounds great, too.

My only problem, as mentioned in some of the previous reviews, is that the DELUXE isn't very. In the nearly two decades since the movie was originally released scant new material is available here. The packaging was minimal even for a standard feature release. That said, this movie is worth owning and should be shown regularly in junior high school music appreciation classes.
