Using a critical science studies perspective not previously applied to research on social insect symbolism, Rodgers attempts to "debug" this theoretical co-construction. She provides sufficient background information to accommodate readers unfamiliar with entomology -- including in-depth explanations of the terms used in the research and discussion of social insects, particularly the insect sociality scale. The entire premise of sociality for insects depends on a dominant understanding of high/low civilization standards -- particularly the tenets of a specialized division of labor and hierarchy -- comparisons that appear to be informed by nineteenth-century colonial thought. Placing these theories in a historical and cross-cultural context, Rodgers explains why hierarchical ideas gained prominence, despite the existence of opposing theories in the literature, and how they resulted in an inhibiting vocabulary that relies more heavily on metaphors than on description.

Such analysis is necessary, Rodgers argues, because it sheds light both on newly proposed scientific models and on future changes in human social structures. Contemporary scientists have begun to challenge the traditional understanding of insect social organization and to propose new interdisciplinary models that combine ideas about social insect and human organizational structure with computer technologies. Without a thorough understanding of how the old models came about, residual language and embedded assumptions may remain and continue to reinforce hierarchical social constructions.

This intriguing interdisciplinary book makes an important contribution to the history -- and future -- of science and sociology.

About the Author
Glenn S. Smith is Regents' Professor Emeritus at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE, and a member of URSI Commissions A and B. His technical interests include: basic electromagnetic theory and measurements, antennas and wave propagation in materials, and the radiation and reception of pulses by antennas.

Graduate-level text, covers unusual topics...

This text is strikes a nice balance between being detailed and still remaining reasonably easy to follow. I like this text a lot because it covers less common topics and derives things. For example, it talks about Gaussian pulses exciting an antenna as well as the standard time-harmonic sinusiodal case. I am not really an antenna guy, but I have to say I found it interesting/amusing that I never even thought about anything other than a sine wave exciting an antenna until I saw this book, because that was all I had seen previously in books. I originally looked at this book while trying to find a discussion for scattering from a circular aperture that is small compared to the wavelength (think of a shielded enclosure with small holes like in your microwave oven). Smith has a complete derivation and gives the the correct transmission coefficient. Jackson's Classical Electrodynamics (a fine book) tackles this, but uses simplified assumptions for the field in the mouth of the aperture, and does not quite get the correct answer because of the questionable assumptions, as Jackson himself points out. I have found only one electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) book (by Christopoulos) that even bothers to list a formula (much less derive it) for what I think is an important topic (shielding by a metal screen with holes) in EMC. This is one of those books that you will still be glad to have 20 years from now because there is almost nothing in it that will become outdated in 20 years - it explains a great many important fundamental topics very well.

In some exceptionally cosmopolitan environments (Iowa City, Madison, Berkeley, etc.), there may be women mechanics who are less likely to routinely mistreat female customers, but they are a tiny minority among extant car salespeople and mechanics. Very informative

I picked this book up from the library and had to buy a copy. It has information on pretty much every situation a car owner will come across. It covers the basic run-down of a car's systems and parts and how much you should expect to pay to fix or replace a part. It also has a great section on buying or selling a car, and checklists for periodic maintenance. After reading this book, I feel a lot more confident that I can handle any car problems that might come up. Pick up this book (if you can find a copy) for anyone, female or male, who tends to "neglect" their car because they feel overwhelmed by the amount of information they think they need to know to keep it running. This book makes it simple.

If you've ever been in the situation where you need to buy transportation and your mate is out of town, this book is for you. I found it at the library and it was 10 times more helpful than any other book they had in their collection. It is packed with useful information about cars and car dealers. The author could have entitled this book, "Everything you ever wanted to know about cars but were afraid to ask". The writing is clear and precise. Highly recommended.

very helpful, for men and women alike

I checked this book out at my local library, but found it so helpful that I wanted to buy a copy to keep in my car (which I'm currently in the process of buying, with aid from this book....) I can't express my disappointment with finding it's no longer available and can only hope that one day it will be again. Until then...check to see if your library has a copy too!

A gripping account of Kenya's political wars

The hopes of ordinary Kenyans have been betrayed by their political leaders, according to Joe Khamisi in this book. Although many of the events since independence are discussed, the book concentrates on the period between 2001 and 2008, and particularly on president Kibaki's first term of government when the author was a member of parliament and an active political campaigner.

Certain names have been omitted from the book for legal reasons, but there are plenty of powerful people who are named and described in a less-than-flattering light. President Moi's rule (1978-2002) is described as one during which extra-judicial arrests, disappearances and killings took place throughout the country, with critics being tortured in torture chambers in the basement of Nyayo House. More than $2 billion of Kenyan funds is alleged to have been stolen by Moi and his associates.

President Kibaki's reign started on a hopeful note, but things quickly went downhill from there, according to the author. The loose coalition of parties that had formed a coalition to oust the previous ruling party quickly fell to bickering. The anti-corruption platform on which the government had been elected was abandoned, and the culture of impunity for the wealthy and powerful continued unabated.

As the 2007 elections approached, the author was a power broker in the opposition ODM party. Disagreements between Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka led to a split in the party, and the author describes how he supported Kalonzo and brokered a secret agreement between Kalonzo and Kibaki that would result in Kalonzo becoming vice-president when Kibaki was re-elected. However, the author now regrets supporting Kalonzo, who is broadly criticised.

The author is a journalist by profession, and he writes in an engrossing manner. It is hard for an outsider to judge the reliability of what the author asserts, but on the whole the book provides very interesting background material for understanding the Kenyan political situation over the past decade and the very difficult nature of Kenyan politics given the high levels of ambition but low levels of principles embraced by those seeking power.

you can use your Java and Ajax expertise

ZK is a quite specialised development framework that assists with the making of web pages. It emphasises the use of XHTML pages, instead of plain HTML. Which is all to the good, as XHTML makes it easier to have pages that can be well formed and validated. In term, this eases the writing and maintenance.

ZK also lets you write logic in Java, instead of JavaScript. For programmers who use both languages, this should be seen as a plus. Java gives you more raw programming ability, as well as access to a large set of libraries. By comparison, JavaScript is a specialised and far more restrictive coding.

If you are already writing in Ajax, then ZK leverages the success of that approach. This combination of Java and Ajax abilities is a strong feature of ZK.

The book is candid about ZK being for the client side construction. But it also shows how ZK can be used with server side approaches.

Incredible framework, dated book

The ZK Framework is a very impressive framework that allows server side developers to deliver highly interactive and impactful user interfaces. In the beginning of 2010 ZK 5 was released which added a ton of new functionality and streamlined the developer's workflow.

This book was a major disappointment, but I believe I should of expected as much. It is over a couple years old and obviously doesn't address the enhancements that were just released. I rate this book a tad lower solely on the fact that the index is horrible. I'm not sure how you can have a 2.5 page index on such an elaborate framework.

I suggest keeping an eye out for a new edition or another ZK book focused on ZK 5.

The purpose of an Ajax framework is to help the developers build an Ajax based application without the help of JavaScript. As today's demand for a brand new website increases by the second, developers doesn't have enough time to study the brand new framework.

This contradicts the principle behind the framework. Instead of helping the developers build the application fast, they have to go back to their books and review.

But as a book, ZK Developer's Guide is very intensive. Although it is only focused n CRUD based applications, the topics that were discussed covers almost any problem that the developers might face when using ZK Frameworks. People might be intimidated with the number of pages this book has, but the most parts of the book are actually coding that sometimes occupies more than one page.

This book doesn't go around the bush in explaining some things that you might not encounter later on. It goes straight to the point and it uses a very simple yet very relevant example. Even though you are not familiar with ZK, this book will provide you with more than enough information which will help you, in the end, build your own Ajax based application using ZK Framework.

Appendix offers very extensive information about configuration files. This part of the book is actually needed not only the end but right from the start. This appendix will help developers understand better the underlying principles in building this efficient application.
