Ancient myths about war eroded in the trenches, where the relentless monotony and impotence of the solder's life was interrupted only by unpredictable moments of annihilation. Professor Leed looks at how the traumatic experience of combat itself and the wholesale shattering of the conventions and ethical codes of normal social life turned ordinary civilians into 'liminal men', men living beyond the limits of the accepted and the expected. He uses the concept of liminality to illuminate the central features of the war experience: the separation from 'home': the experience of pollution, death, comradeship, and 'the uncanny': and the ambivalence of returning veterans about civilian society. In a final chapter Professor Leed assesses the long-term political impact of the front experience. He finds that the end of hostilities did not mean the end of the war experience as much as the beginning of a process by which that experience was framed, institutionalized, celebrated and relived in political action as well as in fiction.

The first few chapters are pretty basic. The whole book is a mixture of super-obvious, textbook-style ideas mixed in with a some helpful outlines of how children learn social studies. I found the sections on how children learn geography and history particularly helpful, and they had some good activity ideas for these. The book has some good advice, but I wish it had a more critical analysis of power (as in, it could talk more about anti-oppression).

About the Author
Ria Meade is a native Long Islander, living in a harbor community that borders the town where she grew up. Ria drew and painted from early childhood and earned a Bachelor in Fine Arts in 1977. Ria was working in New York City in 1982, when the childhood concern, Juvenile Diabetes, took her sight completely. Life changed dramatically and artistic passion took a back seat as she learned to deal with her blindness. Ria credits being saved by the six Labrador Retriever guide dogs she has been paired with over the last thirty years allowing her creativity to return in the form of these poems. She lives with her present guide Tessie, retired guide Olympia and a plush rescued Calico feline, Thomasina.

Hilarious and on the money!

I read this book in its original Italian (the English version is coming out in a few days) and I must say that Beppe Severgnini has made the most of his year in the US. Many of the things I noticed since moving to America have been captured in this book with rare and insightful humor. Beppe shows differences from how Italians view things (fear of air conditioning for Italians and love of it by Americans) but always with respect. Beppe si not making fun of Americans as much of highlighting how differences can not only be enriching, but funny altogether. I have since read just about every book he has written and strongly encourage anyone who loves humor to do the same.

Severgnini's funniest book to date! I bought the English version ("Ciao, America") and read the two side by side to improve my Italian comprehension. His description of America, through the eyes of an Italian, will have you laughing out loud -- and will give you some insight into the culture we take for granted here. A must-read!

About the Author
Henry�Blackaby is the author of Experiencing God, which has sold 5 million copies and has been translated into 50 languages. He is president of Blackaby Ministries International, an organization he founded to help people experience God in a more intimate way. Born in British Columbia, Dr. Blackaby has devoted his lifetime to ministry. He has served as a music director, education director, and pastor in churches in California and Canada, as well as president of Canadian Baptist Theological College for seven years and president of the Canadian Southern Baptist Conference. Dr. Blackaby went on to serve as special assistant to the president at the Home Mission Board (now North American Mission Board) of the Southern Baptist Convention in the area of prayer, revival, and spiritual awakening. He also served as special assistant to the presidents of the International Mission Board and LifeWay Christian Resources. He has provided leadership to thousands of pastors and laymen across North America and has spoken internationally in over ninety countries of the world. Henry lives with his wife, Marilynn, in Rex, Georgia. He has five children (Richard, Tom, Melvin, Norman, and Carrie), all of whom are serving in Christian ministry, and fourteen grandchildren. His long-range goal is to encourage revival and spiritual awakening in the United States, Canada, and across the world through speaking, praying, enlisting, writing, and mentoring.
