As much as you want to know

'Eyewitness Rescue" is about just what you would think it is about--all kinds of rescue!

But first--just as in real life and in this book--"First on the scene. In any rescue operation, the priorities are to locate those who need help, assist those who are injured, trapped, or in danger, and take them to a place of safety." As with all Eyewitness books the two-page spread is divided between text and photographs.

The next two sections are curious but responsible. First, fictional rescues, e.g. an illustration from "Lassie Come Home," novel and television series in which Lassie, a collie, rescues people from fires and drowning; second, historical rescues , e.g. the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 and rescue vehicles and materials at the time.

The rest of the book, some 50 pages, details the various kinds of rescue: through the use of technology, fire departments, air ambulances, emergency medicine, the police force, armed-response teams, coastal rescues, mountain rescues, using animals for rescue, wartime rescues, natural disasters, and remote rescues. There are more.

Just a couple of examples that jumped out at me. Dog soldiers (who receive medals for bravery) are trained to go out into battlefields to locate wounded but still living soldiers. There, next to the human, the dog lies until rescue arrives. Another is an amputation kit from the 18th century. It had varying sizes of saws and knives to cut varying sizes of human limbs from fingers to legs. Hot pitch was used to seal cauterized wounds. Later an ointment made of egg yolks and turpentine sealed the wounds and improved survival rates.

More modern examples of rescue techniqes include the police helicopter equipped with a heat-sensing camera to locate missing people or suspects even in darkness or bad weather. One other example is the pain relief available to victims with serious injuries. This is administered through anesthetic gas. Every ambulance carries a Primary Response Pack loaded with all manner of emergency supplies.

Every time I read through an Eyewitness book I think about children reading each one and getting an idea for a future career or field of study. An area of rescue is surely a noble calling.

Text Analysis Explained to Biologists

This book was written to help biologists manage the flood of literature in their profession. Online search tools help some, but not enough. Text analysis, "the process of discovering and extracting knowledge from unstructured data," can help with this literature tsunami. Biologists--and researchers in related disciplines--can use the tools and techniques of text analysis to identify relevant documents, extract useful information from them, and discover new relationships between these hard-won nuggets.

Sophe Ananiadou and John McNaught have assembled a collection of chapters written by experienced text analysts. They cover the primary subareas of text analysis with little overlap. These chapters are well-documented, use examples from biology, and explain them well enough to make the book accessible to non-biologists. After a concise introductory outline in the first chapter, readers become familiar with the general techniques of natural language processing, the various research communities using NLP techniques, and the tools and other resources they have created. Subsequent chapters cover terminology management, abbreviations, named entities (think "proper nouns"), information extraction, and corpus tagging. The final two chapters discuss how text analysis techniques are evaluated and how results are integrated into structured data analysis.

The clear explanations and accessible examples make this book a reasonable first read for anyone curious about text analysis. Pliny the Elder's Natural History is published in many volumes covering a number of topics, which he differentiates by "books."
Books 33 through 35 deal with Ancient Greece painting and sculpture and the artists who created those works. Because all Ancient Greek paintings have been destroyed by time, natural disaster or vandalism, Pliny's remarks on the expertise of the painters are particularly valuable to anyone interested in Greek art. His pleasant, easy-going, somewhat gossipy style---as translated by Mr. Rackham---is altogether entrancing, entertaining as well as informative. He tells some wonderful stories about Greek painters, stretching credulity but nevertheless charming the reader totally.

About the Author

Elayn Martin-Gay has taught mathematics at the University of New Orleans for more than 25 years. Her numerous teaching awards include the local University Alumni Association’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Outstanding Developmental Educator at University of New Orleans, presented by the Louisiana Association of Developmental Educators.

Prior to writing textbooks, Elayn Martin-Gay developed an acclaimed series of lecture videos to support developmental mathematics students. These highly successful videos originally served as the foundation materials for her texts. Today, the videos are specific to each book in her series. the bible of pure cutting technique

The Sassoon ABC cutting manual is the bible of haircutting. I wouldn't cut hair any other way than in these pages. I purchased the 2013 edition which apparently is a new binding. I got it from the actual Sassoon salon in chicago. the book is very thorough on each fundamental technique as well as combining them into real haircuts. This is the same book their stylist train by as apprentices and the same techniques they will use on you if you get a haircut in their salon. Sassoon has no secrets, how they cut hair is in this book! the layout and design of the book is beautiful. this is the most important tool for any hairdresser! what good are your shears and salon if you don't know how to cut hair?! there are many books out there on how to cut hair but this is THE BOOK! this is a must have to every hairdresser in the world. the current updated editions are no where on the internet and even their own site is often out of stock. it costed me $130.00. if you can not find the ABC cutting manual, I would go as far as calling one of their salons and asking them to mail it to you. A hairdresser must have this!

About the Author
Kathryn Stout is a Christian educator, consultant, and speaker. An honors graduate of the University of Delaware, Kathryn holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education. During her eight years in public schools she taught, tested, and developed programs for students who did not respond to traditional strategies.

She homeschooled her own two children, Clea and Christopher, for fourteen years using the Design-A-Study materials she created. Both graduated from college with honors. Clea earned a BA degree from her parents' alma mater and a Juris Doctorate from Widener University School of Law. Christopher earned a BA in cinema-television from the University of Southern California, attending on a USC Presidential Scholarship.

Thought-provoking Movie Watching

I used this book with a class of 13 year old boys. Finding their powers of perception sharpened after only two sessions, their excitement in viewing old movies was incredibly palpable. Interestingly, black and white movies took on a new dimension with Sam Spade and "The Maltese Falcon". Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant, who liven up "The Philadelpha Story", made romantic comedies a new interest for the young men. While watching "The Music Man" they boys were introduced to "Trouble with a capital T" and the memorable "76 Trombones" which they still reference to this day. As a teacher, I learned a great deal of insight about these movies and my class has been trained to watch these old classics in a new thought-provoking way.

My style has always been considered "doodling" but where many consider this a mindless artform, to me it's satisfying and aesthetically pleasing, and perfectly suited to colorers.�When I planned an alphabet book, the pencil outlines of each letter was only the start. I spent months researching the objects that would go into each letter - bonus point if you can name the animal in Q!! :)�One of the main reasons I produced this book, was because people wanted to colour initials for gifts - for instance a grandmother told me she wanted to color all her grand children's initials. It seemed to me to be the perfect book for this.�I hope you enjoy this book - if anyone is brave enough to try and spot every single object within all the letters, get in touch.... Amazing detailed letters of the alphabet - therapeutic colouring at its best

I love adult colouring books is perfect if you enjoy colouring in detailed and small spaces. I prefer colouring in complicated pictures that take ages to complete. This is nice because you can start and leave it or in most cases I get glued to it and don't want to stop until I have finished. It allows you to be creative even if you are not naturally artistic, it will bring out your creative side. I like matching the colours to use in these alphabet shapes. The fun thing is you can use loads of different colours and it just keeps looking better and better. With some colouring images you need to stick to 3 or 4 colours or it starts looking messy and complicated whereas with the alphabet drawings you can start by colouring in the leaves or a particular item that is repeated on the letter and then go from there. There are many different techniques and ideas for how to colour in but in my opinion you should just go with the flow and see where you land up. You can never make a mistake.

I prefer using copic markers because the results are very bright intense shades but then there are many different ways to colour in and so much choice, coloured pencils are always great too. A word of caution if you are thinking of using alcohol markers, they will bleed through to the other side of the page so you would need to put a piece of cardboard there to stop it leaking on to the next page.

The pages are not perforated so you would need to carefully tear the page out. In total there are 2 x 26 alphabet letters from A - Z and at the back of the book there are a 4 small symbols that are added to the book. In the middle of the book there are more free pages with exciting symbols. Another bonus to this book is a special code for a free pdf doodle name of your choice.

26 of the pages have a single letter on and 13 of the pages have 2 letters along side one another so you receive a large letter and then a small one of the same letter in the same design.

It is a wonderful therapeutic book and it is suitable for all skill levels and children could enjoy this too. For me the big plus is the amount of detail in each one.

Lots of fun, relaxing coloring!!!

This book is a blast to color! Because the art consists of fun, cartoon-style doodles, I really felt I could go all out with my color choices, not at all hindered by trying to be coordinated with hues or matching tones. Coloring doodles makes you feel free to go all over the spectrum! There is a "hidden item" element as well as you try to find the objects related to the letter.

The paper quality is smooth, if a bit on the thin side, but since the designs are one-sided, that doesn't present a problem for markers as long as you use a piece of paper to prevent bleed-thru. The art is crisply hand drawn as well and objects are a comfortable size, not too tiny. Highly recommended as it made for a very relaxing, meditative coloring experience.

Experience with Technology provides some missing DNA to the world of HCI. I am impressed with how Dr. al-Azzawi brings in literatures that are often neglected by mainline user researchers, e.g. social theory, categorization, and brand. He does so in a thoughtful and compelling manner. The scholarship is thorough and top-notch, especially in the synthesis of it all in his ICE model. This book straddles the line that is often hard to manage; it serves as a solid foundation for academic coursework as well as an impetus for practical application of theory.� In it all, his writing is lucid and pithy; there is not a wasted word. I strongly recommend this to HCI practitioners who believe there is nothing new in the field. There is, and it is within the pages of this book.
