A Practical How-To Guide To Planning and Developing Compelling Presentations

Professor Abela has compiled a step-by-step guide to how to plan and deliver compelling presentations. Let me dissect that praise:

* Plan: Professor Abela walks you through the important questions you need to consider before you open up PowerPoint and begin pulling your slides together. This includes analyzing your audience, enumerating your objectives for the presentation and establishing a story structure through which you can marshall and convey your evidence. This is far and away the best framework of the many I have seen for pre-design work. The great thing about Professor Abela's framework for planning is that the framework is just as useful for meetings and speeches in which you will not be speaking to slides. Clearly the objectives, story and evidence are more important than the content of your PowerPoint slides. Wouldn't it be great to have a way forward if you are left with only 5 of your scheduled 30 minutes to present or the projector breaks down? Use Professor Abela's planning framework and you'll be ready.

* Deliver: Not all venues are alike, and Professor Abela takes the best of Tufte and other visualization experts to lay out guidance for designing presentations for a ballroom and a boardroom setting. Abela provides workable guidelines for using charts and layout to visually augment your message. This book includes a number of standard charts that easily and clearly represent the basic concept you are trying to convey on each slide. As much as I enjoy Tufte, Abela's book gave me direct actionable guidance that I needed to augment my spoken message with visual evidence.

Recently I applied the "Extreme Presentations" methods to a talk at a professional conference. The presentation itself (ballroom style) stood out as more visually informative than the standard corporate fare delivered by the other presenters. More important, though, is that I had clearly mapped out the change in mindset that I wanted to see in my audience. I had properly structured my talk to marshall the appropriate evidence in sequence and make the case successfully. As I created my problem-solution and anecdote outline I actually became excited for the opportunity to make my case to my audience. Following the presentation several attendees approached me to comment that I had changed their mind on the critical insight that was my goal.

Using "Extreme Presentations" to create a presentation takes longer than the standard corporate presentation (at least my first presentations developed in this model have taken longer). The quality of the visuals and the reception by the audience really does deliver a worthy return on that time investment. It's clear to my audiences that I've taken the time to think about them, consider their interests and taken care to create a good-looking and relevant set of visuals. This quality makes it clear to my audiences that I care about them, and that goes a long way towards making the audience care about what I am communicating.

A must read for every presenter, manager, and leader

This book lays out a methodology to create presentations that make a real difference. And the method works - my company subscribes to Corporate Executive Board, a industry best practice research service that follows the methods in this book. CEB is one of the few companies that I make time to attend their presentations because they are worth my limited time. And not only is the research solid, the information is presented in a way that makes it understandable and makes an impact with executives and managers. The method is repeatable, simple, and can make a difference right away.

I know. I've given a half dozen presentations using just some of the methods and have noticed my feedback scores increase. I've had people ask me for advice on presenting. That's results.

This book isn't about presentations, flashy graphics, or even the Zen of presenting. It about communications. And it debunks a lot of presentation myths with solid research. Its worth its weight in gold (even at today's prices!) to people who need to get their point across to groups of any size.

A must-have for developing evidence-based presentations.

It's not every day I see a book offering chapters with names like "Marshalling your evidence" and "Assembling the anecdotes that will illustrate your evidence". Abela answers the question "What does the evidence say about presenting evidence?" This book analyzes the building blocks of effective presentations in a way I've never seen.

Abela provides specific evidence of what's most likely to work, and why, when you want people to *act* on something you present to them. But the book is more than a recap of scientific findings: It's written from the perspective of a marketer and business manager, offering practical, evidence-based advice about how to focus on a problem your audience has, and how to show them you can help solve it. Three key topics are:

1. Structuring stories. Abela presents a SCORE method for sequencing evidence: Situation, Complication, Resolution, Example. The aforementioned "Assembling anecdotes" chapter talks about three types of stories we can use: 1) One that relates directly to our situation, 2) a hypothetical story, or 3) a more metaphorical one.

2. Using graphics. The book provides numerous examples of charts and other graphics, explaining which can help you best present your data. I've heard plenty of discussions of visual presentation -- Abela goes into more detail than most, staying focused on interpreting the hard evidence about how to engage an audience.

3. Setting goals for your presentation. Abela talks about setting measurable objectives for what you want your audience to think and do differently after your presentation.

I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to present convincing evidence in a business environment.

Fun, quirky and way too short

This book takes place at an organization called S.W.O.R.D, an agency with similar purpose to the Men In Black. The plot takes place over the course of a single day, following Beast and Agent Brand over the course of the former's very hectic first day at work.

The story moves quickly, with many problems popping in the course of these few hours. There are coups, several invasions and worst of all--a visit from Agent Brand's trouble inclined half-brother. There's plenty of humor and the art is, from what I can tell, very good.

My only real complaint is that Beast's new character design, which differs from the design on the cover, took me a while to get used to. He's gone from ape-ish, to feline to this new facial shape which resembles a cross between a horse and a malnourished Scottish terrier.

Overall a very good book, and well worth the money spent because I will likely find myself rereading this over and over again.

Kind of X-Men

Beast is a big character. Lockheed and Henry Peter Gyrich are supporting characters. You have small appearances by Cypher, Warlock, Hepzibah, Cyclops, and Emma Frost. Gyrich takes over S.W.O.R.D. and decides that to save Earth, every alien must be deported. Beast (who has left the X-Men) and S.W.O.R.D.'s former leader Abigail Brand try to save Earth from real threats while at the same time protecting alien rights against Gyrich. It's not the best X-Men story ever, but it works. Has enough action to keep you entertained.

5 issues of fun

Like most of the world I ignored SWORD when it came out. It's another X-Men spin off with the most recognizable characters were Beast, Lockheed and Agent Brand. With no real stars, the book got lost in the crowd and was cancelled after just 5 issues, which has to be some sort of modern record.

But still it had an interesting premise of a double-plus secret agency keeping Earth safe from alien threats. So when I saw a cheap copy on clearance I picked it up and y'know it's pretty darn good. And despite the short run Gillen is able to tell a tight, interesting story that stands on its own. The basic premise is that coniving bureaucrat Henry Gyrich allows several crises to come to a head, thus distracting Agent Brand from his real agenda. So Brand has to deal with three different alien invasions while he conducts a government round up of Earth's alien population.

Watching her run from crisis to crisis dealing with each one coolly and ruthlessly is a lot of fun. The book also introduces her supporting cast including an alien robot in sort of a Hannibal Lector role, giving invaluable advice from his cell while manipulating everyone.

There's guest stars galore and it's easy to see how good this book could have been if it lasted.

Steven Sanders' art is solid and traditional, though this take on the Beast is a bit cartoonish.

I have some nits to pick, like most comics from Marvel and DC the status quo is God so what should have been major events with long term consequences (like rounding up Earth's aliens) are quickly forgotten. Even Gyrich, after driving Earth to the brink of war walks away clean and is returned to his status quo until another writer needs him. Oh well, it's the price of working in a shared universe.

Generally though it's a fun read. If Marvel had initially done this as a limited series I think people would have been clamoring for more but by launching it as a continuing series then quickly pulling the plug they left this book with a stick on failure on it which causes it to be unfairly overlooked.

A must buy!!!

This book is a must have for new designers. I have a B.A in Design and half a business management degree. During and in between study I have managed many retail boutiques. This book illiterates every point that needs to be addressed if you are wanting to venture into the fashion industry. I knew 90% of this book, however, it was a fabulous read to regain information that had disappeared from memory.
As most new entrants to the market you will find wholesaling the easiest way to start out. This book takes you through important terms to be aware of when selling and has many templates to think of.

I can not recommend this book enough. I now feel after many years of putting my dreams on hold due to fear, I am ready to take my first steps into the industry on my own.

Very Helpful

I am an MBA student considering starting my own fashion line. I know lots of stuff about business (although I have never started one before), but very little about fashion. I can't sew or draw. I just know what I like. This book tells you everything you need to know, no matter which side of the coin you're coming from (businessman or designer). I purchased another book at the same time, one that looks a little more 'user friendly', but this book turned out to be so much more informative, while maintaining the same level of 'readability'. You don't have to be an expert in anything going in, but if you're serious about starting a line, start with this book.

Great basic info

This book provides a great starting point for learning your way into the fashion world. I'd recommend it for someone who is planning to start a fashion brand and haven't gotten a clue where to begin when it comes to the business side of things. However, don't expect this to be an all-inclusive tutorial - there is still lots to learn.

This richly illustrated book presents a selection of the rich and varied iconographic material from the Scandinavian Late Iron Age (AD 400-1050) depicting clothed human figures, from an archaeological textile and clothing perspective. The source material consists of five object categories: gold foils, gold bracteates, helmet plaques, jewelry, and textile tapestries and comprises over 1000 different images of male and female costumes which are then systematically examined in conjunction with our present knowledge of archaeological textiles. In particular, the study explores the question of whether the selected images complement the archaeological clothing sources, through a new analytical tool which enables us to compare and contrast the object categories in regard to material, function, chronology, context and interpretation. The tool is used to record and analyze the numerous details of the iconographic costumes, and to facilitate a clear and easy description. This deliberate use of explicit costume shapes enhances our interpretation and understanding of the Late Iron Age clothing tradition. Thus, the majority of the costumes depicted are identified in the Scandinavian archaeological textile record, demonstrating that the depictions are a reliable source of research for both iconographical costume and archaeological clothing. The book contributes with new information on social, regional and chronological differences in clothing traditions from ca. AD 400 to the Viking Age.

one of the strongest entries in a good series

This is probably the single strongest book of the 7 or 8 I've read in the 33 1/3 series. Wheaton strikes an excellent balance between smart, wide-ranging formal analysis and open praise. His attempts to tease apart the individual sounds that go into making the dense, dark, beautiful world of Portishead's music made me rush back to listen to each track of Dummy over and over again, and marvel at just how remarkable their work is. But what is even more impressive is how he successfully shows the resonances between Portishead's music and broader trends in musical/cultural history. The way he hints at the remarkable, tangled web of connections; of technologies, people and geography, which operate both above and beneath our basic daily awareness and how much of Portishead's music does the same. The writing in this book is sharp, engaging and weirdly ominous. Kind of like 'Wandering Star.' I sincerely hope Wheaton writes more books in the future. The 33 1/3 series would be better as a whole if more people had Mr. Wheaton's wide ranging curiosity.

Standout in an Extraordinary Series

I'm a huge fan of the 33 1/3 series. True, some are hits, some are misses. RJ Wheaton's exegesis on Portishead's Dummy is absolutely in the former camp.

Wheaton artfully weaves background on the album's composition and production with biographical information, all the while making a point to put the album into context - of the times, of its peers, of its genre, of its influences and impact.

The best entries in the 33 1/3 series do two things. First, they make you want to listen to nothing but the album under review for at least a week. Second, they elicit a new appreciation for the album, regardless of how well you know it, or how long you've been a fan. Wheaton's take on Dummy accomplishes both.

A very good entry in the 33-1/3 series

I've read quite a few of the 33-1/3 series, and I think this is one of the best entries. It gives a great insight into the making of the album and also positions its creation within the greater musical trends of the time. My one disappointment is that the book presupposes the instance of a single "Bristol Scene" that existed around the time of this album; but the city is also important as home of two other scenes -- that of iconic indie label Sarah Records, and the more experimental sounds of the loose collective of musicians that included Flying Saucer Attack, The Third Eye Foundation, Crescent, Amp, Movietone, and others.

Jessica Rett studied linguistics at the University of Michigan and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. She now teaches theoretical semantics at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her primary research interests are degree semantics and the semantics/pragmatics interface: the study of how the meaning of words and language affects the use of language, and vice versa.
