For anyone acquainted with the ubiquitous Myers-Briggs personality test, Please Understand Me will be familiar territory--but gone over with a fine-toothed comb. And for the uninitiated, this book will be a quick introduction to personality typing the Myers-Briggs way--with a Jungian accent. After presenting a brief rundown of 20th-century psychology movements, Keirsey and Bates encourage you to take the 70-question "Keirsey Temperament Sorter," a sort of mini-Myers-Briggs test that places you in 1 of 16 personality types. Like the Myers-Briggs system, this test sorts your personality into groups of extraversion/introversion (E/I), sensation/intuition (S/N), thinking/feeling (T/F), and perceiving/judging (P/J). Unlike the Myers-Briggs system, Please Understand Me also presents four easy-to-remember temperament types--Dionysian (freedom first), Epimethean (wants to be useful), Promethean (desires power), and Apollonian (searches for self)--that underlie the 16 possible personalities identified by the test. The book then delves into a detailed analysis of each type, with sections on mates, children, and leaders. An appendix paints portraits of the 16 possible personality types.

Unless you're already a true personality-typing devotee, this book may seem a little esoteric, especially the somewhat "in" references to psychological theory that few laypeople will be likely to understand. But give it a chance and you may find that you'll begin to understand why you always know where to find Anna Karenina on the shelf (you have an ESTJ husband), why your boss is sarcastic one day and praises your achievements the next (she's an NF), and why knowing the reason that the sun comes up in the same place every day is important to your little one (he's Promethean). You may even find that once you accept quirks and ticks in others, they will understand you a little better, too. --Stefanie Durbin

A valuable tool for improving all of your relationships!

I tend to be very skeptical of any book that smacks of 'self help,' but "Please Understand Me" has been one of my most frequently referred-to books ever since I bought my first copy five years ago. I don't ordinarily push books onto friends and family, but somehow or other I can never keep myself from INSISTING that others read--and, most importantly--USE it.
I've always known I'm a kook, but never really understood why. I took the Kiersey Temperament Sorter in the front of the book, and found that I am split between INTP and INTJ, two of the rarest personality types. Most of my family members are SPs and SJs--small wonder they think I'm a wacko! And no wonder I kept thinking they were uptight, or lacking in imagination. No wonder they don't get my jokes (which are not really jokes--and if you don't get that, you need to read this book ).
The light "Please Understand Me" has cast on my relationships with my family and friends has been of inestimable benefit. Sure, my ESTP father drives me nuts, but now I understand why, and it allows me to step back and say, "that's how he is--consider this before tearing off on a rant, will you?" It also helps me understand why I am so close to my INFP kid sister, but fought constantly with an ISTJ ex-boyfriend. By understanding how the different types relate to the world and the people around them, it is easier to understand why they behave as they do. It becomes easier to be more compassionate. Rather than lashing out in irritation and frustration because I assume I know why someone is acting the way he or she does, I can use what I know about the Myers-Briggs types and try to see the world through that person's eyes. Some very problematic relationships have been profoundly changed for the better, as a result.
I recently bought "Please Understand Me II," and recommend it as a companion volume; it expands on the ideas here, and is gives more in-depth analysis of the types, but this is really where you should start if you're interested in Myers-Briggs. If you're stuck at Christmastime, wondering what to get your family members, maybe you could give everyone a copy of this book. Get them to take the personality test, and compare notes--especially with people you've never really gotten along with. What better gift than mutual understanding?

"Please understand me"

Keirsey's explanation of the different temperaments was a real eye-opener for me. Finally I understand why people get upset with certain of my character traits, and why I always felt so misunderstood by some people. It was a big relief to know that after all, I'm "normal", and so are the others. Where there used to be resentment on my or the others' part, we now knowingly smile at each other, saying "ah, there shows your J again, can't help it, can you?"
Keirsey introduces us to four basic opposite tendencies in temperament, then describes the temperaments, and applies this to the areas of relationships, work, children, and learning.
The book starts with a questionnaire that you can take to determine your type. I would strongly advise not to just read the part about your own type, though. The real aha effect comes when you read about the others, too. You won't even need everyone to take the test, you'll know just by what you've read what types you're dealing with. It's fun to realize our differences and see them in a new light.

Understand Me, Understand You

I am an INTJ, and always wondered why everyone wasn't like me. Well, it turns out that I make up less than 1% of the population, and this book was a great help in helping people to understand me, but also in giving me the information I need to realize that everyone is different, and everyone needs to be understood in a different manner. What might make total sense to an INTJ, might really hurt someone else's feelings. And getting passionate about an illogical point in an arguement completely backfires when dealing with someone like me.
Everyone is different, and this books helps to at least start defining those differences into 16 general personality types. Now, there is still a ton of differences within a single type, but getting to 1 of 16 is a great start at dealing with those around you, as well as giving them some insight into your personality as well.

My first long distance relationship occurred during the Triassic period, when the dating site creators wandered the earth in diapers. The daughter of missionaries, I was living in Indonesia then. I chose my words with lapidary care, sprinkled them onto fragile blue stationery, and tossed them like hopeful paper airplanes across the Pacific to someone I had met in college and dated (platonically) just six times before. His own paper airplanes were written on endless rolls of brown paper wrapped about in string, the words pecked out on an ancient black typewriter in an Alaskan campground encircled by magpies and moose. He eventually proposed over the phone. I was felled by a migraine the day before the wedding, the day I married someone I had not seen in months and hardly knew. During our honeymoon he lost his wedding ring. On the second night he drove our rental car onto soft beach sand as the tide came in, aiming the headlights towards twinkling lights that beckoned from a town across the bay. The eager waves swept in to drown the car along with our luggage locked helplessly in the trunk. That same weekend I learned he was overwhelmingly in debt. I held on for two decades through foreclosure, bankruptcy, IRS debts, and much more. He married me because he was enthralled by my background, while the security I sought in him was a mirage.
Eventually another long distance relationship twinkled in the distance and I sailed out to meet it. The emails came from a man whose knowledge of Asia far exceeded mine who spun tales of elephant attacks, pouncing lions and lunging wolves. He had escaped death in Antarctica and Indonesian mangrove swamps; a mountain was named after him. Well, it was a small mountain, but a mountain still. We lived in different states. I was a moth dazzling into a porch light.
Lisa writes: "I'd learned not to let my imagination run away with me. I'd learned to ask good questions and listen carefully to answers. I'd learned to figure out what I thought of these men, rather than just trying to make sure they were attracted to me. "
At the beginning of my first relationship I should have asked questions about finances and responsibility. I might have learned that he was hopeless with finances, was a bit of a bully, and that he preferred independent, tough women. At the beginning of the second relationship, I should have asked blunt questions about the other relationships in his life. The mad adventurer had serious relationships with two women while he was writing to and meeting with me. I didn't know about the young Indonesian nurse until she read his emails and sent me a very nasty email from his iPhone. My relationship with him was as inconsequential as those lights that had twinkled to our car from across the ocean.
Please read this book and take it to heart. It is important. Ask the questions, one by one, and listen to the answers. And if you find a time machine, please let me know so I can get in. And I will bring this book with me.

A Mix of Light & Serious Questions..

My boyfriend and I just finished this book. We would read some questions each time we talk on the phone. The questions range from light hearted and will give you something to laugh about; to serious questions that really make you think. There are even a few questions that may have you saying, Oh my! Can I really say that? All questions help you get to know each other better. It was interesting to find things in the book that we have already shared or had begun to do. We noticed that a couple of questions duplicate from other relationship books. Also some questions are a series of questions grouped in one. Over all I would say it's a very good book for what it aims to be. I would highly recommend this book to other couples in long distance relationships.

Food for thought... and fodder for conversation

I'm not in a long distance relationship, but was looking for some new ideas and things to talk about with my husband. Having known each other for so long really depletes the number of "when I was younger" stories. And having only one child results in more conversations about princesses than is good for anyone's sanity. I really enjoyed a lot of the discussion questions in this book - some we'd already covered but some helped us talk about new things even after a decade of marriage. And "new things" is great while we're under the same roof let alone when we're separated because of travel. I mean, really... which would YOU choose to have with you on a desert island for a year - high speed internet access or a person?! And IF a person... WHO??

One of the best books I've read so far this year

I wish I had this book 10 years ago! I would totally recommend this book as must read for any single person who wants to learn about marriage before ever contemplating taking that step. If I had a daughter or son I would use this book as a training tool long before they are ever engaged to help them avoid all the present day misteachings and pitfalls challenging marriages today.

About the Author

John Fox is professor of sociology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Fox earned a PhD in sociology from the University of Michigan in 1972, and prior to arriving at McMaster, he taught at the University of Alberta and at York University in Toronto, where he was cross-appointed in the sociology and mathematics and statistics departments and directed the university's statistical consulting service. He has delivered numerous lectures and workshops on statistical topics in North and South America, Europe, and Asia, at such places as the summer program of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research, the Oxford University Spring School in Quantitative Methods for Social Research, and the annual meetings of the American Sociological Association. Much of his recent work has been on formulating methods for visualizing complex statistical models and on developing software in the R statistical computing environment. He is the author and co-author of many articles, in such journals as Sociological Methodology, Sociological Methods and Research, The Journal of the American Statistical Association, The Journal of Statistical Software, The Journal of Computational and Graphical Statistics, Statistical Science, Social Psychology Quarterly, The Canadian Review of Sociology and Anthropology, and The Canadian Journal of Sociology. He has written a number of other books, including Regression Diagnostics (SAGE, 1991), Nonparametric Simple Regression (SAGE, 2000), Multiple and General-ized Nonparametric Regression (SAGE, 2000), A Mathematical Primer for Social Statistics (SAGE, 2008), and, with Sanford Weisberg, An R Companion to Applied Regression, Second Edition (SAGE, 2010). Fox also edits the SAGE Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences (QASS) monograph series.

Great condensed reference for diagnostic techniques

This book is an ideal, comprehensive short reference for regression diagnostics that has most or all of the techniques in one place. John Fox is the current master guru of regression, and his writings are very authoritative. Very useful desk reference for the practicing statistician, but perhaps not totally accessible to the beginning learner.

Very obtuse and incomplete

This book, given its focus on a narrow subject, is actually pretty long. 90 pages to cover regression diagnostic is a long slog. Yet, the author sates that "because of space considerations... there is no treatment of [autocorrelation]." That is a huge gap as the independence of the residuals is one of the main assumptions of the linear regression model. The author admits that much when he describes the corresponding Gauss-Markov theorem on pg. 40.

Throughout the book there were so many math notations that were undefined that I could not clearly understand what the author was conveying. For instance, on pg. 16 he talks about the Mellows stat associated with the terms Cp and p. Neither are clearly defined. I guess p is number of independent variables (a guess at best). But, I have no idea what Cp stands for. Later on page 24, he defines the h or hat value in a less than transparent way. On page 28, m is undefined. On pages 68, 87, and 89, NID is undefined. On page 89, V is undefined. Given that those terms play important roles in many equations throughout the book, I could not grasp their meaning.

The narrative itself is often perplexing. For instance, on page 25, the author states: "... even if the errors have equal variances..., the residuals do not." Given that residuals and errors represent the same thing, this quote is not readily comprehensible. There are other somewhat confusing sentences within the book.

Occasionally, I came across tests I knew and calculated long hand in Excel. Yet, as he described them I could hardly recognize them. This includes the Breusch and Pagan test and White test on pages 73, and 74.

Two basic guides to overall econometrics do a good job of covering the entire subject including diagnostic tests in a far more transparent way. Those are: Econometrics For Dummies by Roberto Pedace and a A Guide to Econometrics - 4th Edition by Peter Kennedy.

Good introduction to problems with multiple regression

Multiple regression is a powerful and useful statistical technique. It and its derivative techniques are workhorses in the social sciences. Much of my own quantitative research is based on the use of regression. There are real strengths of this method: the results have pretty straightforward interpretation; you can control for a wide variety of variables; software (such as SPSS) makes it easy as pie to run.

However, there are problems with multiple regression that the user needs to be aware of. For example, if two independent variables are highly intercorrelated, you may get--as one result--strange results. High intercorrelations are indicators of the dread problem of multicollinearity. Hence, when running a regression, one would want to test for this effect. Thankfully, programs like SPSS allow one to test for multicollinearity in a variety of ways. Just so, outliers (extreme scores) can throw off results. The researcher can check to see if there are such outliers. Other problems for regression discussed in this slender volume: non-normality, heteroscedasticity, and nonlinearity. The good thing is that contemporary statistical software allows one to check these out.

So, a good resource for the person wanting to run multiple regression while making sure that the data do not confound their results.
