About the Author
Stephen Littlejohn (Ph.D., University of Utah), is a conflict management consultant, mediator, facilitator, and trainer. He is consultant for the Public Dialogue Consortium and a partner in Domenici Littlejohn, Inc. Stephen is co-author of Moral Conflict: When Social Worlds Collide (Sage, 1997) and has written numerous other books and articles on communication and conflict. He was a professor of communication at Humboldt State University in California and is currently Adjunct Professor of Communication and Journalism at the University of New Mexico. He has done research on mediation and conflict management for 19 years and has been an active mediator for eight. Stephen has been a consultant for such clients as the Waco Youth Summit, the Alliance for Constructive Communication, the City of Cupertino, Columbia Basin College, and Washington State University.

Karen Foss received her Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Iowa and is professor of Communication and Journalism at the University of New Mexico, where she has served as department chair of Communication and Journalism, as well as director of Women Studies. Her primary areas of teaching and research include rhetorical theory and criticism, feminist perspectives on communication, and social movements and social change. Karen Foss (Ph.D., University of Iowa) is Regents' Professor and until recently was Chair of the Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of New Mexico and has joined Stephen Littlejohn as a co-author on his bestselling textbook,Theories of Human Communication, 9th Edition. She has been at the University of New Mexico since 1993 and in that time served not only as a departmental chair but also as Director of Graduate Studies for the department and as Director of Women's Studies. In 2005, she received the Gender Scholar of the Year award from the Southern States Communication Association and was named Presidential Teaching Fellow for 2004-2006. Her research interests include contemporary rhetoric and criticism, social movements and social change, and feminist perspectives on communication. In addition to her work on Theories of Human Communication, she has co-authored Women Speak: The Eloquence of Women's Lives, Inviting Transformation: Presentational Speaking for a Changing World, Contemporary Perspectives on Rhetoric, Feminist Rhetorical Theory (SAGE 1999) and Readings in Feminist Rhetorical Theory (SAGE 2004). Dr. Foss regularly teaches feminist rhetorical theory; rhetorical criticism; rhetorical theory; women, agency, and change; and public speaking

An excellent overview...

I read an earlier edition of this book when I was a graudate student. I now recommend this book to any of my own students wanting a concise overview of the many different theories of communication. There is no better book for this purpose.

Book purchase as college text

If you are into theories of Human Communications, this is a great book. I would have read it without having the class! It came in the condition I expected and was a good reference.

This new edition of William Pratt's indispensable anthology of Southern poetry, The Fugitive Poets, contains an expanded selection of poems and poets not included in the original, including six poems by Laura Riding, the only female member of the Fugitive group. Originally published in The Fugitive magazine from 1922 to 1925, the group dominated by Robert Penn Warren, John Crowe Ransom, Donald Davidson, and Allen Tate formed the major school of 20th Century poetry in America. This collection chronicles the impact of literary modernism on these (mostly) Southern poets as their region was taking its "backward glance" before stepping over into the modern world.

About the Author
William Pratt was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma, in 1927, and earned a Bachelor's degree in English in 1949. At Vanderbilt University for graduate study, he received an M.A. in English in 1951, and a Ph.D. in 1957. Since 1968 he has been Professor of English at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, publishing essays, reviews and translations in books and periodicals. He has lectured widely on Modern Poetry in the United States and Europe.

Wistful, realistic, pregnant with classical allusions

The Fugitive was a magazine published between 1922 and 1928 in Nashville, Tennessee. The collaborators centered in and around Vanderbilt University and included such luminaries as John Crowe Ransom, Robert Penn Warren, Allen Tate, and Laura Riding. The magazine served as a refiner's crucible for these and other intellectuals who would later influence the Southern Agrarian movement. The themes of the Southern Agrarians appear in poetic form in many of the works included in this fine collection. A reluctance to concede to the spiritual demands of modernity, a distrust of the machine-age, and a wistful remembrance of an almost forgotten Southern sensibility strike the reader with the force of a blow. These poets, while attempting at times to render a specific regional voice, more often than not delve deeper into the "mannishness of man." Their poems are realistic, conscious of the fallenness of the South and those who live in it. Particularly powerful are the poems of Ransom. "The Equilibrists" is perhaps the finest poem written in America about the regrets of lust, sin, and stoically held honor. Ransom's poems about death, and there are many of them included here, evoke the sense of family, loss, and the cycles of the living as surely as do his portraits of decrepit mansions and overgrown gardens. These poets also self-consciously upbraid themselves and each other for the arrogance of youthful intellectual and artistic promise and the vanity of a life whose hopes are pinned on words. The Fugitives were reactionary in their use of the classical tradition. The reader may have to refresh a working knowledge of Ovid and Virgil in order to fully enjoy what is a remarkable collection of poetry.

Good Southern poetry

Read while deployed. Great overview of the Fugitives. I'm already a fan of John Crowe Ransom and Allen Tate. A good sampling of the poetry of the Fugitives during their heyday in the mid 1920's. Necrological and Old Mansion are my favorite Ransom poems and both are in this edition. Additionally, it includes Donald Davidson's Lee in the Mountains 1865-1870 and his tribute to Allen Tate: Lines Written for Allen Tate on his Sixtieth Anniversary. The Fugitives were regionally distinctive and pushing against the boundaries of the Old South. Four of the Fugitives were part of the Agrarian movement, which also inlcuded (at least intellectually) the poet Wendell Berry. These are poems to be savored.

It survives in the memory of anyone who was there to experience the excitement, thrill, mania and love surrounding four young men who defined an image and created a soundtrack for a generation that came of age in the 1960s. For fans, associates and the innovators themselves, the echoes from a hot summer night in New York still resonate through the years.

The Beatles at Shea Stadium

On the 15th August, 1965, the Beatles played to a record crowd of 55,600 at Shea Stadium. It was, at that time, the largest rock concert ever staged and, later, John Lennon was to reflect that it was where he, “saw the top of the mountain....”

This book gives all the background to the concert, including information on promoter Sid Bernstein and New York DJ’s Cousin Brucie Morrow and Murray the K. Many people who attended the concert, either as a fan or because they were involved in the show in some way, are interviewed and share their stories of that momentous day. In 1965, the attendance and revenue were record breaking – it was the height of Beatlemania and the birth of stadium rock. In many ways, it was a concert that changed the music scene forever, with bands afterwards demanding a larger share of the profits and better security, sound and organisation. Yet, despite the obvious need for crowd control, it seems to have been a good natured and happy event. Fans recall the constant screaming, like “white noise”, but the police were there simply to protect them and scoop them up if they broke towards the stage. Nobody was hurt, nobody fought, there was no trouble – just an overwhelming excitement and enjoyment.

Every song performed is looked at in depth, including the finale of “I’m Down” – where, famously, John played the keyboard with his elbow, as the band gave up battling the roar of the crowd and just performed with enjoyment. Having arrived nearby by helicopter, even the fans wondered how they would “get away”. They were finally whisked away in a station wagon and, as fan Doug Fernandez recalled, “It was electric, it was fun and then it was over.” Years later, when Paul played with Billy Joel at the last show held at Shea, the same man drove him to the stage who had driven the band on that first show.

This is a fascinating account of that day. It has detailed information on everything about that ground breaking concert and also about the making of the television special. Many documents are hard to read, but the author assumed (correctly) that completists will want to see them and, where possible, letters are transcribed. There is a very interesting letter from M. Clay Adams to his son, Michael, after he travelled to London to record the Beatles overdubs for the tv special, including his impressions of both George Martin and the Beatles.

It is also interesting to note that, amongst the crowd at Shea that day were many famous faces – including the Rolling Stones and also Meryl Steep – who was keen to tell Paul that she had made a banner for him saying, “I’ll love you forever, Paul”, when she presented him with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (he said he remembered it!). Also there were both Linda Eastman and Barbara Bach, yet to meet their future husbands in person. This is a wonderful collection of memories and stories and, although it is obviously about one specific event, it is a must read for Beatles fans.

A must read for all Beatles fans! Schwensen takes an "eyewitness" approach to reporting this story, using key insiders to shed great detail on all events related to this seminal concert. It's not the first time he's written about the Beatles either. He's steeped in knowledge, being a consummate fan himself, so he qualifies as a very reliable source. The book is exceptionally well written and features plenty of revealing photos. It also makes a great gift for the Beatles fan who thinks he/she knows everything about the band... and with a cover to cover read, truly can.

Didn't Enjoy This One

I was looking forward to this book simply because I love the Beatles, but the 1965 Shea Stadium concert was something I was interested in learning as much as I can about. It was such a wonderful time in their career and such an exciting, pivotal concert. Unfortunately, after reading it I'm confused about all the five star reviews. With the exception of the fascinating section on the re-recording of the soundtrack, the book is filled with self serving and extremely boring, stories from people who had something to do with the concert in a working capacity: I.e. journalist, technician, d.j. etc. They talked about how their day at Shea went....how heavy the cameras and tape recorders were, their journey to the stadium, the weather, generic descriptions of the crowd, sitting in the dugout, walking to the dressing room, seeing and meeting the Beatles, and then....more crowd descriptions, but this time it was all the people in the dressing room. Not one of these people had much to say about the Beatles themselves, which was very disappointing. I was excited to read an anecdote from a Radio City Music Hall Rockette who actually had dinner with the Beatles the night before the concert. I thought, 'Oh this will be interesting...she actually had dinner with them'...but the anecdote went something like this: her journey from Radio City Music Hall to the restaurant which was next door or whatever, and she needed to take some elevator that all the Rockettes used. ( how fascinating) She made it very clear that she was above the Beatles and seemed to be prepared to dislike them...and guess what! She didn't like them. If you are wondering why however, you can continue wondering because she doesn't give a reason. My guess is that she didn't want to like them and went into the restaurant with an attitude that the Beatles immediately picked up on, so they probably didn't like her either. This is speculation because again, beyond her self absorbed anecdote the reader does not receive any information on the Beatles themselves, even though they were sitting with her at a table, having dinner with her. In all fairness she did remark that she liked Ringo and got his autograph for some niece or nephew, and she thought their hair looked dirty. Riveting...thank you.

I really tried to like this book but the entire first half was so boring I kept putting it down. The second half though, which is about the re-recording in January 1966, of the concert soundtrack in preparation for television broadcast, is really fascinating. Included in this part are the actual documents connected to this project and even a very interesting letter about the Beatles from the producer's son who was living in England, to his father. Finally this section contains wonderful impressions of the Beatles....how they worked together, and with other people connected to the re-recording project, and what they were like individually. Perhaps this section is the reason for all the five star reviews. It's certainly a reason to recommend this book. However because I found the first 50 percent of the book so boring, I had to knock off two stars and only give it three. It's not the author's fault that people are often self centered and dull, and therefore their stories are dull. I give Mr Schwensen a lot of credit for a book that is very well put together, and well written. If only he had been able to find more interesting people connected with the actual concert, this would have been a five star book. I'm sure the task of finding people who actually had something worthwhile to say, would be daunting to any author.

reS-Gr 1-The origins of Thanksgiving are explained by a group of mice as they put on a play for their animal friends. Cushman's cheerful spreads show the little creatures using handmade props and putting their all into this neighborhood production. The characters are charming and the colors are vibrant. Where pictures appear in a smaller frame, objects often extend into the borders for visual appeal. The problem comes with the text. Short rhyming stanzas at first seem to offer a pleasing read-aloud pattern, only to dissolve into an odd scheme, and readers may constantly try to recover a poetic balance that isn't there. Another problem comes with fictionalizing the Pilgrims as mice and keeping true to the Thanksgiving account. These diminutive Pilgrims wear clothes, sail on the Mayflower, suffer a hard winter, and plant corn, but that continuity breaks when "They built new homes in tree trunks-" instead of houses. There is a scarcity of Thanksgiving books for this age group that can adequately explain the historical significance of the holiday in very simple terms. Halloween Mice! (Clarion, 1995) by the same duo hit upon a combination of text and pictures that works very well, but it isn't trying to tie in a historical concept. If you aren't overly concerned with an odd poetic structure or a break in the logic of mice as Pilgrims, then this book should fill a gap in read-aloud Thanksgiving material for the younger set.

Thanksgiving is the story within a story here, as interpreted by a group of little costumed mice who are putting on a pageant. The rhymed verse sets an upbeat tone for the action. There's plenty of comic byplay in the watercolor illustrations, which show the furry thespians acting out a very simplified story of the Mayflower voyage, the hardships the Pilgrims endured on land, and the triumph represented by Thanksgiving. The happy--though occasionally hapless--members of the little troupe slosh paint on the stage and knock each other over with bits of scenery, as well as acting out the tale with enthusiasm. Preschool and early elementary grade teachers looking for a short, light introduction to the holiday may want to give this colorful picture book a try. Carolyn Phelan

Disappointing...

Not as cute or informative as I had hoped. I was looking for an age appropriate Thanksgiving story for my 3-year old, but this is defintely more for toddlers than preschoolers. Not quite exciting enough to hold his interest.

Decent holiday fare

This is a pleasant but fairly mediocre Thanksgiving book for young kids. Its premise is that mice are putting on a play about the first thanksgiving. We watch the show and then cheer at the end. The artwork has a few clever moments in it depicting stage hand mice pushing Plymouth rock props into the scene, etc. The text, however, doesn't flow very well. It is told in terse couplets, as if in verse, yet often the verses fail to rhyme - or if they do, we wait a few pages for the rhyme to come. Thus, any readaloud singsong quality which the text is apparently meant to have (and which is the only thing that might compensate for its abruptness) is foiled. The idea of the play is engaging enough to make this an interesting addition to the sometimes thin genre of Thanksgiving picture books.

The mouse characters are as endearing as always, and the illustrations lend humor to the story, as the mouse characters struggle with props and preparations. A “BEAUTIFULLY RESEARCHED HISTORY” OF THE COURAGEOUS 17th MIDDLESEX PALS: THE FINE FOOTBALLERS BATTALION

The sickness of heart which one feels when receiving news of a bereavement runs through this brilliantly and extensively researched book on a special part of the Great War’s Pals’ battalions: the people of the Footballers Battalion.

Andrew Riddoch and John Kemp have produced a challenging picture of the footballing lives lost 100 years ago in their updated work “When the Whistle Blows”. The authors have updated this special history for the centenary of this terrible war and I am reviewing the title on the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme as a special tribute to those who died on that terrible morning.

Much will continue to be said and written of the Great War as we now look at the conflict historically as the participants have gone from the field. I found this book incredibly sad to read for two reasons: my great uncle served in a Pal’s battalion and was killed in action, and I have also served in the British Army so I have a very small understanding (but not much) of what it was like although, as a volunteer myself, my motivation was, like the footballers, different from conscripted men.

I have also been a footballer (of sorts) as will all my generation and although very tall, it has never been a game that interested me much until I read this book and saw the special eye for the ball which these men all shared.

Football (or soccer) reigns as the greatest of all our games of sport played across the globe, so this book is a fitting tribute to all the keen-eyed men who gave their lives for their country from such a special and quite wide group of sportsmen.

And my sadness is tinged with the special waste of life associated with these particularly talented people although one could also write that of any specific group who died in World War One.

The excellent Richard Holmes wrote in 2008, quoting the authors, that “the spirit of the professional players, amateurs and ‘club enthusiasts’ within the ranks of the battalion made a lasting impression on everyone who encountered it”.

Holmes sums up for me that this is a “beautifully researched history of a fine battalion” and “a lasting tribute to men who remained true to their salt when the whistle blew, not on manicured greensward, but in a muddy trench”. Richard always put it so well!

Another splendid and sensitive comment about this book comes from Gordon Taylor who says “they paid the ultimate sacrifice” and “we will remember them” as the book “fully illustrates why it will be impossible to forget such heroes”.

And remembering these brave and skilled men is the lasting legacy of Riddoch and Kemp’s studious work with its excellent and careful chapter footnotes… and the book should find its way into most football club houses in the land as a memorial to football and footballers (one can but hope) and of that time in history, and possibly for today’s fans to ponder their heroes’ courage.

It is such sad imagery that when the army’s whistle was blown and the grappling up the trench wall started as they went over the top, it was not like going out into the floodlit arena, but to no-man’s land for their country and not their team, to the noise of a barrage and whistle and not to cheers.

Great history of a splendid battalion with many legendary names from soccer who were part of the 17th Middlsex battalion and the sheer heroism of every man who fought. Many congratulations to Andrew Riddoch & John Kemp for a very readable history.

This book addresses this issue by looking at the economic, political and cultural perspectives of China, Japan and South Korea, focusing on dynamism and potential consensus regarding an East Asian development model. The chapters offer a historical background to the East Asian development model, as well as in-depth case studies of each of the countries concerned to show that whilst the East Asian development model does have distinct characteristics as compared with other areas, and other countries may draw some insights from the East Asian experience, it is not a panacea that fits all circumstances and fits all times.
