About the Author

Toyoko Imae joined National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taiwan, as a chair professor in April 2009, immediately after retiring from Keio University, Japan. She has also held the position of professor emeritus at Nagoya University, Japan, since 2006. Her major research focuses on the fabrication, functionalization, and physicochemical investigation of nanomaterials, including polymers, nanoparticles, and molecular assemblies, in solutions and at interfaces. Her research fields extend even to applications and commercialization beyond basic science. As a result of her energetic efforts, she has published about 270 peer-reviewed journal articles, 25 reviews, and 25 book chapters and edited the book Advanced Chemistry of Monolayers at Interfaces: Trends in Methodology and Technology in 2007 and Neutrons in Soft Matter in 2011. Her excellent research work is given high importance by scientists in the associated research field not only in Japan but also all over the world. Recipient of several awards, Prof. Imae also contributes to the academic advancement as typified by an editorial advisory board of scientific journals. She is an executive member of the Council for Science and Technology Policy in Japan and a member of the Science Council of Japan.

Roaring Thirties!

I can't comment on the veracity of Tolands account, so this review deals with the book's impact on someone reading about the 30's American Gangster era for the first time. The book is fast & furious. It has a style & pace that seems totally in sync' with the wild events & full-blooded characters involved. Dillinger & Company come alive here. The accounts were thrilling, detailed & totally enjoyable. Although the author is commendably non-judgemental, not unsurprisingly, Dillinger comes over as the Class-Act of the the mobs. Whilst he certanly had a style, I use the word "class" with some reservation! The rest were just out & out villians! I was pleased to see the lawmen get a fair share of the action. The dedication & bravery of these men is in the most part commendable & a credit to their profession. The thought of facing up to a gang, including such vicious characters as Baby Face Nelson & Homer Van Meter, armed to the teeth with automatic weapons, is chilling indeed. The bank escapes give the reader a good feel of the times. It seemed that a five minute chase from any city centre bank would find the fugitives deep inside a maze of unmade roads. An almost total lack of communication between law enforcers, plus State Line jusridiction restrictions made the already fraught pursuit of these characters difficult indeed. I thoroughly enjoyed the book & recommend it very highly. I also agree that it is a good "appetite whetter" for more books of similar genre.

Revisiting a Standard Text

When first published in 1963, Toland's The Dillinger Days seemed to be the definitive work on the public enemy era, as both a biography of John Dillinger and as a sweeping chronicle of the whole Midwest Depression crime wave, also including "Pretty Boy" Floyd, "Baby Face" Nelson, the Barker-Karpis gang, "Machine Gun" Kelly and Clyde Barrow. Indeed, Toland may even be credited with launching a revival of interest in the Barrow gang. The scattered passages on the Barrows, whose fleeting fame was largely forgotten outside Texas by 1963, was largely the inspiration for the later movie Bonnie and Clyde. Toland's main subject here was of course Dillinger and the sections on the other gangs are scantier and often erroneous. Errors also appear in the Dillinger chapters. The "second Dillinger gang" was really "Baby Face" Nelson's, which Dillinger joined after the Crown Point escape, the exact details of which will never be known with full certainty though subsequent research--by Girardin and Helmer, Joe Pinkston and others--indicates that Toland got it wrong. The "Dillinger" letter to Henry Ford was long ago proven a forgery. As a straight Dillinger biography, Toland's book is actually far less detailed and accurate than the slimmer work, nearly contemporary with his own, Dillinger: A Short and Violent Life by Robert Cromie and Joe Pinkston. Still, as a history of the Depression crime wave, it was about the best volume available in 1963. Subsequent research has turned up much new information in recent years. Other authors have corrected Toland's errors. But the fact remains that Toland's work inspired a great deal of this research. Many of us gangster buffs got our start with Toland's book, so a lot of the new information available today probably wouldn't have surfaced without it. And for all its flaws, Toland's book remains a useful starting point for anyone interested in the gangster era--the Dillinger days.

Ok but not great

John was pretty much on the money in dexcribing that this is not a book entirely about Dillinger but about the crime wave that hit the Midwest in the mid 30's and the various gangsters that were a part of it. My complaint about the book is that it read more as a travel log or calendar of events of the various gangs exploits, ie Dillinger and company went there, robbed bank, went here to hide out. It does not in any detail investigate the personal motivations of each of the gangsters or the people that helped and sympathized with them or the social situation in the country that helped spawn them. In other words, its not a very deep book. If you are looking for a timeline or an introduction to the events that made up this period in US history, its ok. If you want to understand why it occured, look elsewhere.

In 1820s England, 28-year-old Lydia Grenville is a few inches under six feet tall and mind-numbingly beautiful. Clever as well as gorgeous, she is the author of a London newspaper's most popular adventure serial and has also penned scathing articles about the prostitution trade in the city. Her less-than-ladylike occupation, checkered past, and questionable lineage make it highly unlikely that she will ever marry a member of the Regency ton. However, in keeping with a long legacy of hell-raising ancestors, Vere Mallory, the notorious Duke of Ainswood, has a reputation for flaunting society's dictates. Besides, one look at Lydia and he loses his heart, although at the time, it doesn't occur to him that love is what he feels. He terms it lust and sets out to bed the beautiful Lydia.

What follows is an endearing, hilarious contest of wills between a woman determined to hold her heart and body safe, and a man just as determined to conquer her. In a final, winner-takes-all contest, Lydia and Vere come to terms, but neither is sure just who won and just who lost the wager. Is it possible they may both come out winners? Meanwhile, Lydia's very public crusade against the worst offenders in the city's illegal prostitution business has earned her dangerous enemies. Just when it seems that Vere and Lydia may resolve their personal contest of wills, the dark forces at work in the seamier side of London threaten not only Lydia, but also Vere's beloved nieces.

The Last Hellion has a cast of well-drawn characters who play out their scenes against a backdrop of Regency England that's both lushly rich in descriptions of the wealthy and darkly gritty when traveling the back streets where poverty rules.

Well-matched, appealing protagonists, a lively, witty writing style, and excellent dialog complement this compelling story that addresses some of the more relevant social issues of the Regency era. Chase has won two Rita Awards, including one for Lord of Scoundrels (Avon, 1995), the prequel to The Last Hellion, and lives in Massachusetts.

About the Author

Loretta Chase has worked in academe, retail, and the visual arts, as well as on the street—as a meter maid—and in video, as a scriptwriter. Books by Loretta Chase are worth waiting for!

I've enjoyed Loretta Chase since she used to write Regencies for Walker Publishing. Her research is first-rate and her characters full-blown and believable. The sexual tension she generates between her protagonists is always exciting and rewarding, too. Grenville and Mallory are made for each other, of course. Lydia Grenville was born to heal Mallory, the Duke of Ainswood's, tortured soul. They both lost children they adored---Lydia her little sister, Mallory his young nephew, and the losses bring them together. But, first, sparks fly as the two challenge and bring out the best (or is it the worst?) in each other and titillate the ton (English high society) with their very public antics and capers. There's a great dog in the story, too, great in size and great in personality. Loretta Chase is not one of those romance writers who comes out with a book every few months, but when she does come out with one, it is "cherce" (to quote Spencer Tracy describing Katherine Hepburn in one of their films). Chase's novels are "cherce" and worth the waiting. Unforgettable, too.

I loved Vere and Lydia's story. Wow, I'm so glad I discovered Loretta Chase's books. She's an awesome writer, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the Scoundrels Series.

Excellent story...I was completely hooked

Dickens would be proud of this captivating story with its twists and turns and family secrets, and a hero and heroine who must come to terms with their troubled pasts before they can be truly happy. Lydia Grenville, raised in poverty, lost her mother and sister as a child and was then abandoned by her wastrel father. She is now a crusading journalist for a popular London publication, and doesn't think very highly of men. Vere Mallory, Duke of Ainswood has his own turbulent history. His parents died when he was nine, and he is the last of his direct line, whose male heirs have all succumbed to untimely deaths. Since the death eighteen months ago of the previous Duke, his boy cousin, Vere has essentially been in a state of depression and denial. He has led a life of dissipation, shirking his responsibilities to his title and to his young female cousins who are his wards. He does not think very highly of women.

The meeting of the two opposing forces of Vere and Lydia is a wonder to behold. At times highly humorous, at times deeply moving, the dialogue is always engaging in the way the inimitable Ms. Chase does so well. Vere's oft-muttered epithets for Lydia are hilarious, and yet there are also times of amazing tenderness. This book has a fine cast of supporting characters, particularly the continuing character of Bertie Trent, who finally gets to prove his worth. The Last Hellion is a very satisfying romance and is highly recommended.
