About the Author
Bharti Kirchner is the author of nine books--five critically acclaimed novels and four cookbooks and hundreds of short pieces for magazines and newspapers. Her earlier novels include Pastries: A Novel of Desserts and Discoveries, Darjeeling, Sharmila's Book, and Shiva Dancing. Bharti is Contributing Editor for The Writer. She has written for Food & Wine, Vegetarian Times, Writer's Digest, Fitness Plus, Northwest Travel, and The Seattle Times. Her essays have appeared in ten anthologies, the most recent being Imagination and Place: Weather. Bharti has won a VCCA (Virginia Center for the Creative Arts) Fellowship, a 4-Culture Literature Award, a City Artist's Project award, two Seattle Arts Commission literature grants, two Artist Trust literature grants, and has twice been a Fellow of Jack Straw Productions. Decent Mystery - Great education on Indian Culture

Tulip Season: A Mitra Basu Mystery by Bharti Kirchner takes you along for a ride with it's star Mitra as she searches for her missing best friend. Unlike most "mystery" books out there, this book has a true realism about it that makes you feel like you are in the story. Not prone to romantic/typical mystery notions, Bharti Kirchner has written a story that introduces you easily into Indian culture as well as keeps you on your toes as you read along to find the "end" to the mysterious disappearance of Mitra's friend.

I found the story idea/plot to be a great choice, but at times was a little confused by the descriptions, the excessive look into the culture and the lack of "mystery". Not typical, yet not a bad book. It was very educational (surprising) and gave me a new look into a culture I am fairly familiar with. As far as a mystery, detective or sleuth book - it was mediocre at best. The mystery to me was easily solved and the book itself was much more about the main character and her daily life, past and how she dealt with her upbringing and ethnic culture.

Bharti Kirchner does indeed have a great way with words and makes excellent descriptions of locations and scenes. Her writing is simple yet not without finesse. I see potential in her writing as she hones her story development skills in coming books. I do look forward to reading her again in the future and see where she takes this character Mitra Basu.

Mitra Basu expects foul play when her best friend, Karenna, goes missing. Mitra begins to wonder what could have become of her best friend and why her husband Adi is not looking for her. Mitra realizes that as an Indian-American domestic violence counselor, Kareena could be the victim of an angry husband. It is possible that she was by some twist of fate a domestic abuse victim herself running from her husband. Many things cross her mind as she works to find her best friend and she begins to come across other surprises, including clues linking her friend to a shady Bollywood actor. Mitra's search brings her back to her childhood home of India and she learns more of the actor's dark world and financial troubles. Will Mitra be able to locate her friend and get her to see the danger she is in before it is too late?

While I enjoyed the story line of "Tulip Season" and felt that the author, Bharti Kirchner, had a way with words, using her words to paint a picture, I found that the book was slow in the beginning. It took a lot of restarts for me to get into the story line. Towards the end, where the story line picked up, I was able to really enjoy the mystery. But then everything went too fast and I felt like I was missing part of the story. Where the story started to climax, it would've worked better to have a wordier story line, yet still not as wordy as the beginning 3/4 of the book. I would recommend this mystery to others who can get past the overly descriptive first half of the book and latch onto the story. I normally love extensive explanation, but, at times, I felt as if I was reading words to fill a page.

A Fairly "Flowery" Mystery

A fairly calm and typical type of mystery. I never really found anything that caught my attention and riveted me to turn the next page. I was very disappointed that the main character Mitra exhibited the abusive relationship tendancies that went along with the disappearing victim being a domestic abuse counselor. Just not my type of reading.

An amazingly good story, well told

The rise and fall of RIM.
RIM rode technology disruption and created a company with $20 billion/year in revenue only to see it disappear by being disrupted themselves.

Lots of lessons here.
1) Even though the CEOs were reading the "Innovators Dilemma" they still had little perspective on how rapid disruption would happen to them. And even less of an understanding what to do about it. (The attempt to integrate the QNX software into existing products is a cautionary tale of technical debt, refactoring and plain bad engineering management.) The iPhone in 2007 should have been a wake-up call to both CEOs. Yet they both fell prey to the classic "disruption always looks like a toy to the incumbents" mistake.

2) The company grew past the management skills of the founders. The insular nature of the founders, the Canadian entrepreneurial ecosystem, founder hubris and a feckless board ended any potential of a positive intervention. It took a complete meltdown to get the board to act.

3) Mike Lazaridis, the technical CEO, fell prey to the "shiny object" syndrome. He discovered new technology (QNX) that he thought obsoleted the current software that drove the Blackberry handsets (Java). But instead of figuring out how to finesse the transition, he literally abandoned the existing development team (and revenue). A great example of how not to manage a technology transition.

3) Dealing with major platform disruption usually takes radical structural changes, not new product features. The story unfolds as a slow motion car crash as the CEOs waited, way, way too long to recognize, let alone deal with it. There's a reason that turnaround CEO's downsize companies and focus on what's important. If you're the founder it's almost impossible to get rid of your favorite projects.

Only quibble others have noted. The book barely mentions the changes Heins made, and almost nothing about Chens strategy.

Reveals new info and adds depth to a well-known story

I followed the spectacular rise and quick decline of BB closely, as a consumer, a tech writer, and an investor, and I still learned a lot from 'Losing the Signal.' The story of how the founders met and ultimately became partners was well told as you realize how happenstance many of the factors leading to the partnership were: it might have not happened at all, quite easily. I was also taken with the descriptions of the early guerrilla marketing and how well it worked. I remember distinctly the first time I saw a BB and the instant tech lust for having my email available all the time. The decline of BB is perhaps a more familiar story, but 'Losing the Signal' enhances the drama with personal human stories: how the founders' genius and strengths ultimately became their downfall: the reliance on efficiency of network and battery use ignored the groundswell of desire for an always-with-me computer. A new wrinkle revealed by the book is the relationship between BB and the carriers, Verizon in particular. While Apple saw their customers as the millions of end users, BB saw Verizon as their customer, which ultimately let them ignore end-user demand. For the new ground covered, as well as the insider info which adds depth to the already-well-known material, 'Losing the Signal' is well worth your time.

Design thinking before there was Design Thinking

I didn't realize the amount of ingenuity and innovation that came from Blackberry. Their story is very often overlooked when considering Google or Apple with respect to design thinking/innovation, but after reading this it is very clear that Blackberry began the archetype of innovator/technical & savvy business/marketing duo that seems to work in the tech space as well as some really innovative products based on design thinking and user experience (before this was really a buzz word in the space). Although they ultimately were "beat" by the Google's and Apples, the story is fascinating to read.

Great for those new to genograms

This helps us to make better decisions about whether or not to give in to what is 'just the way we do things', or seriously consider and/or re-define what you really believe in. I give this book to everyone I work with in premarital counseling; by working on their family diagrams, they come to know better what they will be like as a married person. Totally mind blowing!

Just when things are going good, the rug gets pulled from under Jenna and Tom. Can true love make it. What will they do? You want drama, secrets, love, sex & laughs? This book has it all. Right now my heart truly breaks for them. 4 people who have come together to be good for each other will now have to decide what and who is more important.
Can't wait for the next book!!!

More sex..more lust and a hell of alotta drama! As the relationship grow so do the stakes... but who will fall? Jenna and Tom are not free to explore , because someone is holding their fates and crushing hearts! This love is not a game....

Wonderful Book, Wonderful Series

Wonderful book! Wonderful Series! Jenna is falling in love with her billionaire boss, Tom. Everything has to be kept secret though, because if anyone finds out at work that they are in a relationship, Jenna will lose her job. Things are also heating up between Michael and Rose. Actually, as this book ends, there might be more to be lost than Jenna's job. This book does end with a large cliffhanger. I received this book for free in return for an honest review, and I love this series. You do need to read the whole series, and read them in order. With that in mind, I recommend for you to get Book 1, then books 2 and 3.
