About the Author
Mark Allen is co-author of the book Master Data Management in Practice: Achieving True Customer MDM (John Wiley & Sons, 2011) and is a senior IT consultant and enterprise data governance lead at WellPoint, Inc. Before joining WellPoint, Mark was a senior program manager in customer operation groups at both Sun Microsystems and Oracle Corporation. At Sun Microsystems, Mark served as the lead data steward for the customer data domain throughout the planning and implementation of Sun’s customer data hub. Mark has over 20 years of data management and project management experience including extensive planning and deployment experience with customer master initiatives, data governance, and leading data quality management practices. Mark speaks at Data Governance and Information Quality (DGIQ) conferences and has served on various customer advisory boards focused on sharing and enhancing MDM and data governance practices.

Dalton Cervo is co-author of the book Master Data Management in Practice: Achieving True Customer MDM (John Wiley & Sons, 2011) and is founder of Data Gap Consulting. Dalton provides consulting in Data Management, including Data Architecture, Multi-Domain MDM, Data Governance, Data Quality, Data Migration and Integration, and Metadata Management. Prior to founding Data Gap Consulting, Dalton worked as a senior consultant for SAS/DataFlux, helping organizations in multiple industries with their Data Management and MDM needs. Dalton was also a Senior Project Manager at Oracle/Sun Microsystems, leading Data Quality and MDM efforts as part of a Data Governance Program responsible for defining policies and procedures governing the oversight of Master Customer Data. Dalton has served on various Customer Advisory Boards and has presented at multiple Data Management conferences. This book did not tell me much about MDM and how it was applied to a certain problem. It is very generic. I did not find it helpful.

ROMANTIC AND POIGNANT...THE LONGING IS PALPABLE...

A terminally ill man falls in love with a famous turn of the century actress. The only trouble is that they are separated by a span of about seventy five years. What is a man to do? Why travel back in time, of course.

That is just what Richard Collier does in order to be with the beautiful Elise McKenna, the woman of his dreams. Or does he? Does he really travel back in time, or is it merely the delusion of a desperately ill man who seeks to find meaning for his existence? Does his tenuous hold on life in the present mirror his equally tenuous hold on life at the turn of the century? Is his death ultimately the only way for these unrequited lovers to be united, at last?

This is a beautifully poignant love story in which the longing the protaganists have for each other is palpable. A bittersweet sadness permeates the pages of this book, as Robert and Elise pass through life, each a shadow on the consciousness of the other. One only hopes that they find in the hereafter, what they were denied in this life.

This wonderfully imaginative and inventive book draws the reader into its fantastical web. A veritable page turner, it is a classic story of a love which will not be denied. Read the book, and then see the movie, "Somewhere in Time" with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. You will not be disappointed.

my all-time favorite book - of any classification

I first read the paperback version of "Bid Time Return" in the mid to late 70's when I was sick in bed with a fever, which may have affected my delusion that this was an actual biography - not a novel. Mr. Matheson had me completely enthralled, and wanting to believe that this story had really happened. Disappointed to learn that this was merely fiction, my next goal was to perpetuate this wonderful dream by actually visiting Hotel Del Coronado, which I did - several times. Being there only added to the wonderful atmosphere established by the book. I was thrilled when I learned that it would be made into a movie, but disappointed when I actually saw it. The main problem was that it was set in Michigan, not Coronado Island. And though the hotel was beautiful, it was just not the same. After all, Hotel del Coronado was obviously well loved and researched by Mr. Matheson and was perhaps a distant third in importance after the two main characters, Richard and Elise. Also the movie was set roughly 10 years after the novel's time period. I did love the musical score, but felt Mahler's compositions should have been included, as detailed in the book. After this book, I wanted to learn all I could about Richard Matheson, and later bought "What Dreams May Come", and liked it too, but nothing could match "Bid Time Return". I never read "The Shrinking Man", but understand that in this case the movie did live up to the book. (I remember seeing that and being deeply impressed by it back in the '50's when I was a teenager.) While searching the internet, I see there are many fans of "Somewhere in Time" and can't help but wonder how many of them read the original book. I'm interested in reading "Memories of Elise", as I would naturally want to know what happened to her after Richard disappeared before her eyes. (He touched on it when he saw her as an old woman at a small party when he was in college.) But again, since it was patterned after the movie, and not the book, I'm not sure what my response would be. I agree with Mr. Matheson, there couldn't ever be a sequel, as much as his readers would long to keep the story going somehow.

"O call back yesterday..."

I cannot shake off the impression that to some extent Matheson himself is the man in the hotel room, convincing himself that he can touch the past. Perhaps it was a by-product of an overwrought imagination coupled with a visit to San Diego. Or did he create a well-rounded, complete work of fiction? Disguised as a speedily chronicled delusion? This is one of a number of novels written along similar lines. Some of them are more thoroughly researched and detailed than this novel, but do not have the same emotional core. At times melodramatic, the novel nevertheless creates a touching love story. This is achieved by a disarmingly complex story structure: Richard Collier becomes willingly enmeshed in a web of inescapable fate. He must go back to Elise McKenna; it is written... In many ways the book is superior to the film, but in the screenplay the structure of the story is rearranged slightly. The pocket watch is moved and creates one of the finest paradoxes in time travel fiction. This simple alteration also serves to greatly intensify the character of Elise McKenna in a single stroke without the need for lengthy prose. I was surprised that I had to order this book on the Internet: an almost overlooked book, echoing the photograph of the young and vibrant Elise McKenna, forgotten, slowly fading away in a hotel museum, waiting patiently... I took a trip to California last year. I 'happened' to go to San Diego. I also happened to visit the Hotel Del Coronado: so curiously and specifically identified by Matheson. Why not invent a hotel along similar lines? I went to set my mind at rest. I went to fail in my attempt to find the portrait of Elise McKenna, or whatever her name may be. The 'Hall of History' was closed for refurbishment. I can be grateful for the fact that my faint delusion remains intact. I have since been told that the photograph is there...

Good examples provided

I purchased this text on behalf of our educational design team, who are currently reviewing assessments for group work and peer evaluation. The book is very comprehensive and gives an overview of theory and practice. It provides lots of examples to illustrate the various types of assessment. It is also scholarly with lots of references to the literature - the reference list is excellent for further reading.

Repetitive

I am very interested in how to effectively use assessment for learning. The authors may have some insights on how to implement this. If they had written a ten-page article, they could have communicated those insights effectively. But reading this book you read the same thing over and over again. I tried to finish the book, but could not justify wasting any more time after having completed a little more than 1/2 of the book.

Teacher and screenplay doctor Truby (responsible for popular screenwriting software Blockbuster) brings his complicated but time-tested story development system to print for the first time, a 22-point process that's more thorough-"an extremely precise map of your entire plot" that "shows you the most dramatic way to tell your story"-but also more unwieldy than the traditional "three-act" technique. For example, the first seven steps Truby introduces apply to structure: develop "weakness and need" and "desire" in your hero, give him an "opponent" and a "plan" for overcoming that opponent, then throw in a "battle" that leads to "self-revelation" and, finally, a "new equilibrium." Chapters build on each other, fleshing out these steps with a number of terms and concepts (character types include hero, main opponent, ally, fake-ally opponent and fake-opponent ally) that alternate between cagey (the "character web") and confusing (the nearly indistinguishable "designing principle," "theme line" and "moral argument"). Further frustration arises in Truby's examples, old movies retrofitted with his techniques (most notably The Godfather and Tootsie) rather than a script that has actually been put through Truby's paces (or, even better, a new script invented just to demonstrate the steps). Best by far for novel or screen writers

I have spent a lot of money on screenwriting and novel writing books. I have had recommendations for books that were different, or foolproof; formula based, character based, plot based, etc. In my experience, the screenwriting books do it better than the novel writing ones, but it still takes some searching to find something really useful. I first used John Truby's book for a screenplay I was writing. I followed the first few chapters religiously and discovered I was solving problems I didn't even realize existed, creating deeper characters and stronger arcs all as part of the process. It wasn't formulaic and didn't give me a standard plot, but it did adhere to a few fundamental truths about story and character that cannot be ignored. As with any book, you need to use your brain and alter the rules to fit your story, but trust me, don't stray too far. It's very easy for someone to think that their character or story is "too good" or "above" the rules of conventional story telling but trust me, even the most obscure stories follow this basic format (if they are any good). It gives you relatable examples from a variety of movies, and the exercises are actually practical (none of the tired clich�s such as "write about an experience you had where..." or "tell a story using these key words as a starting point"). All the exercises are specifically designed to help you develop YOUR story, not just any random plot.

Because of the success I had with this method, I used the book again for planning my novel. Now, with a novel there are a few changes that need to be made. More happens in a novel, and of course things like "the audience reveal" are generally strictly cinematic tools and don't translate well to literature. However, I found the same successes with it for novel writing. Same problems being solved, same richness added to the plot and character.

I would recommend this book to anyone writing something with plot. I bought this originally in paperback and purchased the kindle version so that I could just carry around my iPad. Use in conjunction with your favourite other texts (I like Blake Snyder's "Save the Cat" beat sheet for pacing. I cross referenced this with my favourite novels from the genre I was writing in to find the appropriate pacing for the novel).

There is no such thing as a magic book that will make you a great writer, BUT if you have skills and a great idea, this will help you workshop and develop the idea to give you something you actually start writing.

Technical To the Nth Degree

THE ANATOMY OF STORY is not for “pantsers” (writers who write without an outline). It’s an extremely technical manual for people who like to have their whole story, including every plot point, character change, motif and themeplanned out ahead of time.

I found it to be similar in many ways to Dr. Stanley D. Wiliam's treatise on the subject, THE MORAL PREMISE: Harnessing Virtue and Vice for Box Office Success.

The problem for me is, like Dr. Williams, Truby’s method strips story down to bare mechanics, bleeding all the life out of it. I found his method tedious, making things more complex than they need to be. He does show what elements all stories have in common. The problem is, he never explains how to put those elements into practice.

As an author, I'm glad I read it, but I'll probably never read it again.

Bought this on the recommendation of two writing friends and my regret is that they didn't speak up sooner. I've found all of Truby's advice and guidance useful, and quickly found his 7 Key Steps to Story Structure invaluable. My only quibble is a wish that I could understand the material better. There are insights which I grasped easily, but other sections that require squinting and pondering. Not because Truby makes the information difficult, but because I thought I knew more about story structure than I actually do. The book's subtitle, 22 Steps to Becoming a Master Storyteller, should be believed. If you are interested in mastering the craft of writing, then this book should be in your library.
